Kari pestered Jamie for a job for months, before he finally hired her to pose in a leotard, so they could make a 3D model of her butt to blow up to a 500-pound ass to stick in an airplane toilet; she wasn't even fully aware it was TV show, and expected it to be off the air in months, being like the second episode.  Grant was already a (very) minor nerd-celebrity for being a champion contender on Battlebots a decade ago, and was just hired onto the staff when Jamie got tired of pulling his mustache out making wiring rigs for remote-controlled cars.
