Has anyone ever invented any sort of phonetic alphabet for English? I think that would be a pretty swell thing to sit down and establish. A fairly straightforward single-character form of every conceivable pronounceable sound. Might be a fairly long alphabet, but it could be shortened by limiting it to sounds used in English alone. And no, when I say phonetic alphabet I don't mean Alpha Bravo Charlie etc etc.

It wouldn't be too terribly hard, English only has 44 phonemes as far as I know.

When I was little I used to warp words in my head by reversing all letters with multiple associated sounds, so the aforementioned "multiple" would be something like "Mool-tai-play."  It was fun when I was in the car and had nothing else to do.

Is there a reason the IPA doesn't suffice?  I'm pretty sure dictionaries all use it now.
