Hell yes, had a fantastic weekend at the Renaissance Faire I'm working (coughvolunteeringcough) at right now (mayhap had something to do with Guard Dinner) and I found out that I have a dog sitting job for the next three weeks which started today. Finally going to have some money come in.

It's past midnight here and I'm still surprisingly clear-headed. Not sure whether that's good or bad.

Actually, part of the argument is that the last guy out of the mine will automatically be inducted in the Guinness Book of World Records for longest time trapped underground.  So a bunch of them are fighting to be the last guy out.

Dick move on Guinness's part, they all should collectively be under that.
Agreed. That is a dick move.

Guinness isn't about being nice, it's about records. Whoever leaves last will have been down ever so slightly longer than the others, and as such gets the record.

I honestly don't see why the miners care. If I'd been stuck down there as long as them, a silly world record would be the last thing on my mind when rescue arrived.

The horror is temporary and the mental scars will fade with psychiatric help. Glory is forever. Or until someone breaks the record.

You haven't heard about great a time those dudes have had.  Booze and videogames and good food and magazines and loads of hazard and insurance pay.  It's the world's greatest man-cave.

Living it up in a deadly hole in the ground combined with the World Records thing, there's a really poignant message about the 21st century, but damned if I know what it is.

That we live in a crazy awesome global society with such resources and technology that even in the worst of times you'll be far better off than people from several centuries ago?
