It seems to be down to where it was... last year? That reads more like it went 125%-100% rather than 100%-75% :-\

Neat to see what appears to be panicked flailing from the social media sector, though, ha.

Why is it called Prince of Orange? Was it created in a dutch royal botanic garden?

Of Orange - Nassau is our royal dynasty's name. The full title of our King is Zijne Majesteit koning Willem Alexander, koning der Nederlanden, prins van Oranje - Nassau, (His Royal Majesty king Willem Alexander, king of the Netherlands, prince of Orange - Nassau)

It's because young leaves are very, very orange!

Maybe there's a history to the name, but I think it's just because it's orange.

I will, however, appeal before my philodendron for sanctuary in the Netherlands, if that gets me any closer to leaving the country.

Because of the 'prince' part of the name, I suspect it is of royal dutch origin.
You'd be surprised how many ornamental plants find their origin in colonial age royal dutch botanical gardens. We don't just do tulips haha.
And not just ornamental plants.
You know that bulb that just about everyone in the world eats? The potato?
98% of all potato species consumed worldwide can be traced back genetically to a single potato strain bred by the royal dutch botanical gardens.

Well, best I can find is that its origin is from Central and Southern America (as philodendrons are), and/or was patented in Florida in 1988?

My favorite example isn't even ornamental: orange carrots were literally bred that color in honor of the House of Orange.

Then it's probably not dutch bred, or we'd have the patent.
Patent rights are also a dutch colonial age invention btw, just like stock markets.

EDIT: hmm, wiki says 15th century Venice was the first to develop patent laws

The origins of our royalty are a nice piece of CK2 drama

I think I rekindled the local bookseller's aspirations of a book club by asking around for a copy of Isabel Wilkerson's Caste. Pretty sure I've signed myself on in the process, too, which is fun. Between that subject matter and a handful of irate 'customers' throwing bitchfits about Freedoms and Americas and Masks are Tyrannies, she'd let it fall to the wayside (and felt it necessary to bring a baseball bat to work for her own safety). It's... painful, but not surprising to hear. I'm sure her story isn't exceptional.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to buying her copy when she's done reading it so I don't have to feel so bad about having found the ebook online somewhere.

Other pleasant things- watching the sun set in real time as measured by the shrinking sunbeam splayed against the wall, cut and segmented by the blinds, warm glowing stripes surrendering to grey. My candles still smell good. Days are getting longer. I got a package in the mail and there weren't massive issues about it. Good day.

Best part of my new office is the sliding glass door looking out at the Sunset.  So I can appropriately catalog those few sunsets we get between snow storms.

I read that this Prince of Orange is pretty poisonous for cats. If you have cats, better don't have this plant.
