No no-- say for a minute you have actual raw data being thrown in.  You are measuring actual average measured velocity of a swallow, not taking the lowest possible speed, and highest possible speed, and deriving-- you are actually measuring how fast the swallows normally fly, and building a proper distribution.

If more swallows favor the faster side of the distribution than the slower side, the actual average speed will be higher than the midpoint.  this is because there is an asymmetry in the data.

See post just before your last one; I accede that I screwed up, and made an exponential function. (which would then force a bias toward one end, as the slope continually increases.)   It was borne from the bad ideas part of my head, and did not get proper verification.

The very initial argument, was "Only if normal distribution!"--  which would still apply.  A linear distribution is a normal distribution with an amplitude of 0.  ( I think? Fuck, I hate not getting sleep like I should. Specifically, I mean this in terms of measuring rate of change. There is no change in rate of change in a linear graph, so the rate of change on either side of the midpoint is just a flat line. In a normal distribution, the rate of changes goes up as you approach midpoint, then goes down as you reach the other extremum. The rates of change mirror perfectly. The same case is met with the linear graph, since the rate of change is 0. If the rate of change is not symmetrical, there will be an error in your method.)
