I'm mostly grateful that this forum, as an institution, exists. This is where I learned who I was when there was nowhere else safe to explore my identity and my ideas. I was pretty clumsy about it a lot of the time and you guys had to sit through three different sets of pronouns (which is also, incidentally, how I learned I don't care about pronouns), but I really cherish the time that I spent here in my early 20s. And am still proud of placing second in your masculinity competition back when I was presenting as a 5'2" woman with a loud mouth and curly hair.

(my hair's still curly and I'm still short)


I'm doing really well. I'm on a much slower timeline than most of my peers, but I feel like things are moving along and I'm happy. I don't want to go into too much detail -- ask a specific question if you want a specific answer -- but, if there are any young people here, I'd like to say that you might have to fight for your life but if you keep fighting, it does actually get better.

For my health insurance I've been teaching high school (along with other, fancier part-time jobs involving math) for a while, which can be a terrifying job in the US if you're queer. Next year, I'll start a math PhD. This jerk does not give up

Coming out and writing my critical letter were very scary. I spent the year getting 4 of our 9 department members solidly on my side, none of whom "knew" I was queer, but I wasn't planning to say a damn thing. Then during the pandemic I recovered some memories that I had totally forgotten -- just some extremely bad things that had happened that suddenly popped out of my subconscious like a massive zit -- I know that sounds science-fiction ridiculous but my family confirmed like three days later without my directly bringing it up, I guess because I was so overwhelmingly angry when they called.

Anyway . . . I'd been living kind of passively until then and I suddenly decided to make big changes in my life. It felt like I had "earned" the right to do what I believed instead of making everyone else comfortable.


Other good news: this is a good town for picking up clothing discards, and I got some really sweet cotton dresses and a leather coat off the curb (chilling outside my room in decontamination). Gonna come out of shelter-in-place fancy as heck.

I got an offer for a contract as an environment artist. They still want to see my demo reel and resume, but that they liked what they saw so far is great.
