I was specifically alluding to the end of Clannad: After Story, not the first season, which was just called "Clannad". It's likely that you're referring only to the first season and not the part that gets all the rave reviews. If you didn't find it notable then it's unlikely you went on and watched the sequel. It took me two tries to watch the first season myself.

Note that Clannad: After Story has higher scores than the closest Ghibli movie. After Story is the 15th highest rated anime (counting both TV shows and movies) of all time.

If you don't like the user scores on what is by far the largest English-language anime site then you're really going to hate the ones on the Japanese sites. Love Live School Idol Project is the best according to many of those.

I think the main problem with the "Ghibli's the best, Miyazaki's the best" thing is that it tends to shut people off from all other stuff more often than it opens them up to it. I've talked to quite a few people who've seen a Ghibli movie or two and if you tell them they're the best then their attitude is that they won't bother seeking out anything else. There's stuff I like a lot more. Makoto Shinkai and Satoshi Kon movies for a start.
