What're the relative punishments like?

Depends on the jurisdiction. The US federal jurisdiction demands life imprisonment without parole for both second and first degree, and allows the death penalty for first degree. Various state sentencing guidelines are all over the place, and if I remember right most murders are charged under the states and not the federal government.

There's a lot of leeway for them too with mandatory sentences like "10-99 years". A lot comes down to mitigating and aggravating circumstances, as well as the nature of the judge.

The example involuntary manslaughter sentence I saw was 5 years.

Edit: Being happy (for more than a fleeting moment or the duration of a drunk/high) is friggin' weird.
I am not familiar with this feeling. My life, or at least parts of it, are actually going well for a change- and the parts that aren't are easily ignored*, hidden as they are in the immense shadow of the joy crammed into my brain. I'm bouncing between stunned disbelief and a strange, uneasy feeling of having betrayed and abandoned my fellow sufferers and commiserators, leaving behind our barren fields of perpetual anxiety-fuelled suffering to go skipping gaily through bright meadows of glee and footsure confidence.

I dunno. Sorry, not sorry.
I shall cling to this Handhold of Happiness for as long as I can before it inevitably crumbles and plunges me back into the chasm of despair.
