Honestly I sympathize. It's easier to remember what most common stuff is with ASCII than trying to make out the differences between all the tiny little sprites. No offense to the folks that make them, but they're ass-not from lack of effort, but because shit that size is never going to convey information that well if it's more complex than alphanumerics or simple symbols. Every time I thought about using one I looked at the sprites for the various dorfs, thought "the fuck am I supposed to know what they do at a glance?" and forgotten about it.

Once you get up to stuff around the size of Elona you generally have enough space, but even there they go for a lot of fairly simple sprites.

The one thing I like is having ground that isn't an unreadable mess or unrelentingly dull, though with the first half I suspect that's more down to Cataclysm programming me to assume nearly everything that isn't a period is an item or creature.
