I was wondering how the Ethiopian empire handled the Scramble for Africa a while back. I looked it up today, and apparently they handled it by sending their would-be colonizers packing. Pity they got wrecked by communism anyway, but it's nice to know that at least some part of Africa was still able to pull its weight as an ex-major power.

Short version for everyone: Menelik II, king of Ethiopia, was purchasing guns from countries that Italy (his oppressors) did not like. So, of course, Italy forced Menelik to buy guns from them. To Menelik's astonishment, they not only delivered, but the guns he received were of higher quality than standard issue Italian military. Cue curbstomp.

He also had an electric chair as a portable throne.

From what I understand of the situation, they sent them packing by playing one nation against the other to get their military support and access to equipment and training, then kicked them out too. Quite a play that. Was is France and Spain? I kinda half-sleep through history class
