I'm doing the pacifist ending first.  I avoided any serious spoilers though...  It's just how I've always played games that gave me any choice.
My first play through of Deus Ex 1 was nonlethal, except for certain NPCs, and that's really hard.
One of my friends got confused at uh...  Let's call it the first "boss".
I actually don't...  understand...

Anyway I'm not sure how far I am.  I took a break shortly after the music puzzle, after you've met Undyne.  I really should go back and finish it, I'm just busy and not in the right state of mind.

I don't know how fighting even works, I guess I'm underlevelled.

If you try to boot after a genocide ending, flowey asks for your soul. Then if you do ultra-pacifist, you win and break the barrier and everyone goes topside.

Then Charon possesses you and starts killing all your friends.

True Real Bad Ending.

Flowey doesn't ask for your soul. Flowey's dead and gone. That's "Charon" asking for your soul when you reboot after the genocide end.

This is indeed the case.

I finished the game, and have only ever RESET in the intention of getting other friends to play it. And people who do genocide aren't allowed on my PC .

I moved it to it's own category on steam, '#1 Game Pedestal'.

I also have the highest level badge, an undertale steam background, and it is listed as my favourite game :V

This is indeed the case.

...but Undertale trash are the best kind of trash.

I tried to do a No Mercy run, but my heart broke close to the end. A certain skeleton's heartfelt plea convinced me to RESET and make amends. Still, I was glad I got that far. It put something into context that I never understood when I just played as a Pacifist.

I think the popular interpretation of the end of Undertale is slightly in the wrong. The last person you SAVE isn't Asriel... it's the First Child, whom you reach out to and convince that people still have value, and that there's more to life than control and power... much the way that the First Child convinces Asriel / Flowey that the opposite is true.

Meanwhile, in the No Mercy run, the First Child's past experiences, and the cruelty that lead them to throw themselves into a pit at Mt. Ebott are just confirmed by your display of brutality and power-gaming... that the only thing that matters is ruthlessness and power. They weren't a horrible creature all along, but you convince them to be one.

So yeah... it's not just the fate of you and your monster friends, but the First Child's fate as well, that hangs in the balance.

The Undertale protagonist is basically my role model, in both endings. In Neutral/Pacifist it's obvious. In No Mercy it's because of how they keep going when everything is futile and they're dead inside. Even if their goal wasn't as noble as I'd like.

That's... actually a very fascinating take. And salvaging something positive from even the worst behavior. Well done!

I mean it's not the worst behavior in the context of it being a videogame. They are a completionist, and the message was the disconnect between the story of a game and the completionist mentality. If we put their behavior in the context of real life, they'd be more like an intense workaholic than a mass murderer.

The problem is, the game does a rather poor job of explaining the mechanics of that.

Shortly before fighting Toriel, you're all but told that not every fight can be won peacefully solely through ACT/MERCY, and that some point you'll have to FIGHT. Then Toriel comes up, and before long you'll find that ACT no longer works, and even several uses of Spare don't seem to have an effect(and running gets you nowhere), so you can easily assume you'll have to attack her before she sees your point in the matter. Assuming you've been pacifist up that point, your attacks do little at first, but after a number of attacks, the game assumes you actually want to hurt her, and deals lethal damage(damage is based on your intent to kill, after all).

In truth, in NO battle except one(and that's averted in a true pacifist run, but you still do have to do it once) do you actually need to FIGHT.
