TODAY
IS THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF UNDERTALE

wooooo

Its not a huge deal to everyone, but it effected me pretty majorly, and made me really think about empathy, etc. It gave me friends when I had none. And, most of all, without it I wouldn't have met KoSS :3

Well, I might have, but it'd be unlikely.

Anyway, it inspired me to follow my passion of designing games, and it was just... very, very good. I hope, when I make games, they will effect people this greatly

That's pretty cool though, hasn't felt like that long since i played it. Either that, or i'm getting so old that a year doesn't feel very long any more, which is a much scarier thought.

Also i may or may not be getting hoarse tomorrow, since i participated in a SONG EVENING thing, but it was nice. Lotsa singing, way too many high notes, UTTERLY DELICIOUS cake. I wish there was a better way for me to handle high notes, i both sound ridiculous when going that high and it really strains my vocal chords. :I

I accidentally celebrated Undertale's birthday by recovering and sharing my awful musical fanart.

I loved the game for many reasons (I've never had a Waifu, but Undyne comes dangerously close). I still reference it when talking about the things it did with the Video Game as a Medium, which I hope we see more of. The way little unimportant choices get remembered by characters makes every decision feel like it matters and is being paid attention to. The way it makes compassion and breaking a conflict or cycle of violence into an interactive challenge that's every bit as exciting as typical "combat" gameplay is kind of groundbreaking. The way it uses several metagame and self-aware elements to create emotional reactions and personal experiences that extend beyond the gameplay itself is brilliant. Even the damned bullet-hell Battle System uses symbolism, sprites, and animations that create little vignettes, which help the player understand and bond with their opponents, and give clues as to non-violent ways of defeating them... I've never seen anything like that.

As rough around the edges as some parts can be, it's like a Masters Class in game design, and in what developers can do with Games as a medium for touching and communicating with players.
