I strongly disagree with the idea that humanity has somehow grown apart from nature, and it's at the core of the belief that we abuse nature. This is not to say that I don't think we as a species have bad practices that threaten the well being of our planet, and that's not what I want to talk about.

My point is, that we humans and the things we create are physical phenomena born from the Earth, so I would put forward that there is no distinction to be made between the things that humans derive ("artificial" creations) and the things that non-human life derives ("natural" creations). We and the things we create are natural. All creatures and creations are derived from one another and can be traced back to some point of origin, thus there is no distinction between what is natural and what is artificial.

Surely there's already some kind of name for this idea?

I dunno if there is a name for it, but its completely true.  We aren't the only organisms that will destroy our environment.  If you do any brewing, Yeast will happily eat all the sugar in its environment and shit out alcohol until the yeast has consumed everything and poisons itself to death in its own filth.

Pretty much any organism will do that with no regard for nature, its just that usually most organisms don't have the opportunity to do so.

Edit:  Honestly if we manage to pull together the foresight to NOT destroy our planet in the next 200 years, then we'll have defied nature.

I think the issue is that there's never been a species as top or dog as us. Once we were able to stay in one place and sustain a stable population by controlling where good grew/roamed, we knocked the wind out of many entire ecosystems, and still are.

Other animals may want to eat until there's nothing left, but nature made them shit at that.
With humans, it either didn't or this apocalypse is going to involve a lot of annoying "told you so"'s.

The impact we have on the Earth cannot be understated; the only thing I wanted to make clear is that humans are not separate from nature. We're simply a highly successful species.
