It's an old rule from before HIV tests were a thing.

- HIV tests aren't 100% reliable, and only give positive results three months after infection.
- The HIV rate among gay folks is much higher than among the straight population, isn't it? So excluding homosexuals is just as okay as excluding IV drug users: They're a risk group, plain and simple. Sure, there's lots of honest junkies who abstain from needle-sharing, but they become collateral damage as those who don't are sifted out. 'Are you gay?' and 'Are you an IV drug user?' are questions you're much more likely to get a straight and correct answer to than questions which allow some wiggle room. Answering 'Yes' to 'Are you gay?' does not mess with your self-image, while answering 'Yes' to 'Do you sleep around a lot?' probably will.

I'm not saying I know the perfect solution. I am saying that 5 years of abstinence is absurd, and monogamy is a thing that gay people DO engage in.

It should be "if you aren't Celibate or in a Monagomous Relationship", rather than "if you ARE gay", imo.
Single non-celibate people, gay or straight, are the real risk group.

That question leaves a lot of wiggle room though. Imagine someone who according to their self-image is monogamous, but does cheat occasionally. Sure, the same thing is true for homosexuality to a degree - the correct question would be 'Do you sleep with men?'.

TL;DR: The question needs to be simple and clear, not 100% correct all of the time.

Okay, so after all that Prequel talk the other day, I decided to check it out one more time to see if it got any better.

...holy crap has it really been two years since I last read this?

...things are...actually not going too horribly? For now. I'm sure it will all go to crap for Katia again soon.

I'm not entirely sure. If I had to put my money on anything, it's that the comic is coming to an end soon. Overcoming the drinking thing is a major turning point in her development, and since then she's been getting consistently better at coming out okay from situations that would have earlier resulted in completely giving up. Part of what made Prequel so hard to read earlier, at least for me, is the degree to which she was unable to deal with the ridiculous bullshit the setting hurled her way. Even if her actual situation isn't too much better now, she seems to have gotten stronger, which to me feels like a signal that her arc will be starting to close relatively soon - at Prequel's update speed, probably a couple of years.

I could, of course, be wrong. Perhaps she succumbs to vampirism from the bite and falls off the wagon, as depressed alcoholics often do, only now with a need for blood instead of alcohol. Or something. Or maybe I'm simply reading too much into it and the story's end won't correspond with this particular part of her development - maybe it's a precursor to resolving her dream thing or something.

As long as her story ends without descending into utter despair, I'd probably be okay with it. I really, really hope that a new leaf is being turned here however, now that she's got enchanted items, new clothing, she's becoming far more proficient with her magic, etc.

Of course, knowing the author's previous cruelty I would not be surprised if she somehow ends up even worse than before this day started. Disappointed all over again, but not surprised

Between the name of the damn comic being Prequel (allegedly 'to new life' rather than, yanno, Oblivion), the fact that she dreams of an abominationized Emperor and the guard captain is dreaming of what could be construed as Mythic Dawn assassins and the fact that Katia seems to be learning Oblivion starting spells, it's probably coming towards her ending in a cell in the Imperial City, possibly after another possibly-alcoholic blackout.

I heavily doubt she'd get vamped, since that would pretty much obliterate her story arc - instead of having to mope about being useless, she'd at very least possess NORMAL HUMAN STRENGTH, and her approach to people would either by necessity do a 180 or turn her into an annoying WOE IS ME I AM IMMORTAL AND SUPER-STRONG cliche.

I think Sith Lords give their apprentices shitty names in order to boost their hatred. I mean, otherwise why call each other stuff like "Sidious" and "Plagueis"?

All things considered, the emperor was pretty damn considered when he stuck with the relatively tame monicker "Vader", instead of going for, I donno, "Darth Inbreedous", or something like that.
