I actually just started DF again a few minutes ago. I'm a few versions behind by the looks of it.

We're in a tough spot right now in the development.  The foundation for a lot of really awesome stuff has been put down, but in doing so it's made the game significantly less fun (At least for adventure mode) until Toady finishes building the house that goes on that foundation.  I have faith though, that house is coming.

The combat issues caused by the transition to .31 have yet to be fully ironed out. I imagine things will be fine again after a more months of updates.

I don't see why Nethack is the most popular rougelike. IVAN, Rouge Survivor, LCS, and Spelunky (if you count that, it's classified as a rougelike) are far better.

Nethack is popular because it's done and not a gimmick game like IVAN or a peice of crap like LCS. And LCS isn't a rougelike even.

Rouge survivor is fun but too unfinished to stick with, and Spelunky is a platformer with rougelike elements. So you really listed a bunch of stuff that doesn't count.

Edit: You could of at least suggested Crawl. Or even Angband. But hey there's a reason games set up like nethack are known as "Hacklikes"

While I do agree that IVAN is a typical nethack spinoff and that LCS isn't really a roguelike at all, LCS still > your face +10.

I found spelunky to be much more annoying then fun, it tries too hard to blend plataforming with roguelikeness and the controls are clunky as fuck. Tries too hard to be cave story with random levels.

Have you tried it in the past year or so?  Jon Fox did a lot of work to it not long ago, to make it a little more approachable, functional, and explainable.

That being said, I think the reason people call it a roguelike is they treat "roguelike" as shorthand for ASCII games that are very easy to fail at.  And LCS certainly meets that description.
