Why do I keep hearing about this recently? What's Morels, eh?

They are incredibly tasty mushrooms that look kind of like toasted sponges, and only grow for a few weeks each year. Around here, it's the first half of May, when the mayapples and triliums are blooming, usually in moist forests where you also find those plants. Basically, it's a fun excuse to go hiking out in the woods, practice your tree and plant identification skills, watch birds and animals, and if you're lucky come home with something unique and tasty to add to your dinner.

Unfortunately, we found no Morels today (it's only barely getting warm enough to go looking), but we're going to try it again next weekend and hope for better luck. It was still a really nice day out, I found some deer tracks, plenty of mushrooms that I couldn't ID, lots of nice early spring flowers, climbed on some trees, saw a turtle, some fish, and a muskrat, and dug up some tiny wild onions to munch on later. I'll probably throw some photos up in the photo thread some time soon.

All in all, a pretty good day!
