If it weren't for Bay12, I don't think I'd get much writing practice, due to community stories / forum games. This might sound kinda bad but it's somehow easier to write when people demand updates.

I think it's all about how you approach the platform, and how you communicate online. Externalizing your frustrations as the fault of an online community is kinda missing the point, when the thing that makes your skills atrophy or grow is how you decide to write or whatever. Running illustrated forum adventures, writing for silly Let's Plays, running livestreams with inane and possibly entertaining commentary, and all that has been a great place for me to practice and build skills I've always enjoyed. It's something I really appreciate, and it's something that wouldn't be possible in another place, or on another platform. So yeah, this can totally be a great platform for creativity and personal growth! (Side note: this community is something I'm happy for, today).

Moral of the story; skills atrophy from disuse, so if you want to get better at something, find a place to do it, and Do It. It's not the empty pages fault that nothing has been written on it. It's not the canvases fault that your Landscape Art hasn't improved by drawing zig zags and scribbles on it. If you want to get better, just pick something and try it. Screw up, and try new things. It works.
