Wouldn't you rather pay to support the creators of such a great game, though?

Well, that's kind of slimey, that they would charge for what was free a few years ago.
"Abandonware" in general is iffy. It's not like the developers were giving it out for free on their website; some random folks on the Internet decided to give it away, more than likely without permission.

Like OpenXcom.
That requires the actual game files to run. Which means you need the actual game. Not really free.

It was never "free". It was just so old that they didn't care that people were pirating it because it wasn't making any money. Once the new XCOM games came out then there were new people buying the old games after playing the new ones, so they started to care a little again. It's the same as how Nintendo did a bit of a crackdown on the old emulator sites once the Wii "download and play old console games" things came up. There are very few games that have been actually released as "free" (not counting the ones who's game companies have gone bankrupt); the vast majority are simply games that the companies don't care about enough to lock down people sharing them anymore.

As of today, I'm the official cinema mentor of my dorm! Muuch fun will be had, especially if I eventually trick a bunch of people into watching The 120 Days of Sodom.

I dare to presume you are going to be in Moscow while studying in Russia? Or St. Petersburg? That would be rather different experience than Novosibirsk, where there are also plenty of scientific activity. Congrats anyway.

St. Petersburg, at the Nevsky Institute of Language and Culture. As for Portugal, I'll be at Coimbra.

It's a reference to one of the new XCOM: Enemy Unknown Council missions, which takes place in Novosibirsk and is widely considered to be one of the hardest missions in the game, involving an infinite spawner of extremely fast moving insectoid aliens that basically insta-kill all of your soldiers and turn them into hard-hitting alien incubating zombies (alien style).
Not so much. In most of my games in OldCom, Novosibirsk was under attack about once every two months.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
