After a thirteen-hour day, I'm finally back at my computer. In a chair. With food.

Not to burst the egg unboiling method, but one of the reasons that folding and unfolding proteins is hard is that pretty much every protein has it's own unique way of folding. So while we might have solved how some of them fold (I'm looking at you, Folding@Home) we've still got lots more to work on. It's still awesome of course, but it's not quite the "OMG we can cure all protein-folding neurodegenerative diseases" awesome (there have been a few preventative medicines that have been developed already though, which is definitely cause for celebration :) ).

Great study abroad news!

I've been spending the last however many months fretting over whether to spend a year in Portugal or a year in Russia.

Today I'm happy to announce that it will be logistically possible for me to spend a year in both! My scholarship runs for five years, and I'm in year #2. So, it'll probably be Portugal for year #3 and Russia for #4, or vice versa...though two years abroad is going to change me. Not sure how.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I dare to presume you are going to be in Moscow while studying in Russia? Or St. Petersburg? That would be rather different experience than Novosibirsk, where there are also plenty of scientific activity. Congrats anyway.

According to XCOM, you should stay the hell away from Novosibirsk.

Meh?

Do you want the old original or the meh New 'save the world from aliens who kick ass game?

Xcom is an world alien defense game in which you compete with the aliens for the loyalty of world and regional powers, all while you struggle to achieve technical parity with them.

  The original Xcom: UFO Defense is free, and has spawned multiple spinoffs and sequels, including the hardest underwater game ever.

the reference to Novosibirsk is likely a terror mission which are hard.

It's a reference to one of the new XCOM: Enemy Unknown Council missions, which takes place in Novosibirsk and is widely considered to be one of the hardest missions in the game, involving an infinite spawner of extremely fast moving insectoid aliens that basically insta-kill all of your soldiers and turn them into hard-hitting alien incubating zombies (alien style).

Yea, according to google, several abandonware sites claim to host it.

There's a freeware version.

I remember playing it a year or two ago, but I didn't ever understood the cover mechanic so my guys kept dying ;_;

It's not called XCOM though. UFO something something?

Yeah, any free downloads you are finding are ones that were put up when the XCOM genre was basically dead and just haven't been taken down. :P The XCOM games are most definitely not freeware games (excluding some open-source fan-made ones). There are several free XCOM-likes out there though.

Well, that's kind of slimey, that they would charge for what was free a few years ago.
