Yep.  Some people try to tie pig to Latin's porc, some to Low German's bigge and Dutch's big.  Swine, at least, is clear and straightforwardly Germanic by comparison.  Pullet and capon are also still examples in precisely the way you say, since they're not terms for chicken meat in general, but rather special terms for particular chickens (respectively, a young hen or, the latter especially, a rooster castrated to make the meat more moist/less gamey) that would have been more likely to be prepared for nobility.

EDIT: And venison, yes, thank you so much.  That was the one I was completely forgetting; I was trying to figure on why rabbit became the only word we used there, more or less, if there were reasons other than "coney" (the old word for an adult rabbit) becoming a *really* awkward bit of rhyming slang.

EDIT 2: And that would be because rabbits aren't actually native to northern Europe.  They're an introduction from southwestern Europe that would have transmitted via the Mediterranean to France and hence to England, so naturally the term would have come with the introduction of cuniculture.  It's worth noting that they're not just peasant food, though; they actually were very commonly raised by monks in the West because, as the Pope Gregory I himself said, rabbits are technically not meat creatures, and thus may be eaten during Lent.  Specifically, I think they were classified as either fish or fowl, which apparently aren't meat, either. :P

EDIT 3: Just double-checked, and yes.  Rabbits are fish.

Life on the comet? I know I live in a cave, but I figured I'd hear about this somewhere besides bay12 first.
Well, more accurately, organic compounds.
Still no idea what specific types of organic compounds, but still it's really good~
It's basically the building blocks for life. The stuff in the primordial soup we evolved from. This is just on the surface, too. Once the comet moves so that the side the lander is on faces the sun, some of the ice on the surface will melt, and we'll be able to see deeper inside.

So really, this just helps support the theory that life did not originate on Earth, and that those Earth-like planets we've been discovering probably also have life on them. On top of that, there is a good chance that at least a couple of them have intelligent life.

Primordial soup is an outdated theory :P

But panspermia is not! And panspermia is super cool!

That's basically what I was saying. Or trying to say. Or something.

Primordial soup sounds delicious. Do they stock it in supermarkets?

That's outright German though.
Sounds a hell of a lot like "crystal night", though, and translates to "night of broken glass".

I thought it meant 'night of the long knives'? Unless that's a different one.

Edit: Checked wiki and yeah I'm thinking of a different event.

Yep. One was Nazis committing crimes against Jews and working to make as many bystanders as possible complicit in it. The other was the systematic purging of most of the SA leadership. Though they're both German words referring to the Nazis doing something terrible to people, so you'll be forgiven by anyone who isn't super-anal.

Packs a punch, and is mighty tasty.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

Ultramarines are fine, upstanding citizens of the Imperium who always know the way forward.

No, it was a joke about tank arrows.  Gotta tell those airplanes which way the tanks are facing :P

Example of emergent features in games:
Quote from: Toady
I cleaned up some crashes today. One of them involved a night creature that had wandered into a shop and killed the owner... the creature then somehow got assigned as the owner. The crash happened when the night creature tried to come up with things to say to potential shoppers, since it didn't have a civilization as a frame of reference. I fixed that part, but I still have no idea why it thought it should change professions in the first place...
Night creature shopkeeper: bug, or feature, or both? I love that it only glitched out when the creature tried to converse with shoppers, like it hadn't planned that far ahead in it's shop takeover bid.
