Reading the successes of ancient generals can unearth some really awesome victories, like one where consul Quintus Minucius was fighting Ligurians who were well entrenched in a defile and unlikely to move, so Quintus sends in his Numidian auxiliaries and tells them to go full potato, falling off of their steeds/fighting and bickering with one another/being incompetent in slapsticky ways until the Ligurians all gathered around to enjoy the show. At that point the Numidians got back onto their horses and began setting fire to all the Ligurians' shit, forcing them to withdraw to protect their own lands and allowing the Romans to make their way through. Then there's one where Spartacus was trapped because the Romans being fond of digging had dug ditches around his entire army, encircling him with no escape. He filled one section of the ditch with corpses and slain cattle, marching his army over a bridge of bodies. Spartacus again managed to trick a Roman army that had encircled him into thinking he had set up camps by arranging party bodies on stakes to give the impression of sentries. One bloke called Hanno was being chased and surrounded by the enemy and so had his soldiers pile up things onto some exits to set them on fire, forcing the enemy to go around to fight them in exits less aflame. This would work for the enemy only Hanno then has his army march through the fire to victory, shielding their faces with their shields and their legs with their clothes.
