I'm listening to the Dule Nukem theme while reading a Lets Play of Pokemon Mystery dungeon.

Actually, the "real" Pokemon universe is dark and badass. The Duke wouldn't really be out of place at all. It's just portrayed in a cutesy manner because non-Nintendo companies market it to little kids. Which is kind of ironic. Any time someone tries to inject awesome and good writing and badassitude into children's media everyones all "NO KIDS ARE STUPID! THERE CANNOT BE STORY! YOUR CHARACTERS ARE BAD INFLUENCES!".

Also, didn't someone try to make a children's show out of a Duke Nukem-esqe franchise once? I forget everything about it, but I remember Nostalgia Critic or someone talking about it...

The manga "Pokemon special" is... different to say the least, and the creator of pokemon called it the closest thing to what he had envisioned. Trainers get attacked as much as the pokemon and team rocket is truly evil... and very very competent.

The games are too, you just don't get to see as much of it (most of the "dark"ness is implied or hidden, no doubt to appease the goddamn media watchdogs).

You can also totally ignore the plot and just play with cute/badass monsters. Which is fun too.

I think the cute and the dark can coexist.
On one hand, you've got the cute Pokemon that make good pets, on the other hand, you've got the badass ones.
It's like kittens and tigers.

As soon as you start paying attention.

There is a bit of darkness happening (the villain groups experimenting on pokemon, things trying to destroy the world, etc.) but the focus is too much on the kid that's trashing their plans for it to really be "dark". Sure, there's evil, but it's totally incompetent.

That's the other thing.
The protagonists are kids.
Think, when you were twelve, how dark did the world seem?
Of course, some of us are/were pretty fucked up and probably have a skewed view, but whatever.

Yeah, if the villains didn't almost trip over their own feet each time I tried to battle them, then maybe they'd seem even remotely threatening.

There's also the fact that each time I lost a fight with them I passed out like a little girl and they carried me to the hospital. Considering I was in the middle of their secret base at the time, this is the only answer I can come up with.
