Mm... depends on the debt, and how long it's been outstanding. Also who's selling and who's buying. Likelihood of repayment, immediate need of funds, stuff like that. Sometimes it's nearly the whole amount, sometimes it's half, sometime's barely anything, and everything in between. Just... depends.

I got accepted into Guelph. Plus a 2k scholarship, though I am unsure if the scholarship is a sure thing or if I am merely given a chance for it. Woo~

If you've heard any rumours about Guelph having the best on-campus food available, they are entirely true.

I'm considering going to Guelph's uni, then again I might just get my degree online via athabasca.

Being into this stuff [and having asked the same question recently] I decided to look into this further. I figured the price paid for 'bad debt'* would be something in the 20-40% area and found:

The prices paid for debts that your lender has deemed uncollectable will vary. The fresher the debt is (timely payments only recently stopped coming in), the higher the price debt buyers pay. Freshly charged-off credit card debts (typically a minimum of six months of nonpayment) have been sold for 15 or more cents on the dollar in recent years. But the older debts — say a year or more since any payment was made — fetch lower prices. And debts that have already been sold once or twice, or that are a couple years old, are the types of debt you generally hear about going for pennies on the dollar (sometimes even less than a penny).

With that said, the resale of debts is highly controversial.

Turns out it's pretty varied:

One common practice is to offer to settle with debtors for 50% of the original principal. The debtors are tricked into thinking this is such a great deal, and even feel an extra obligation to pay because they think this is an act of generosity on the part of the debt collector. But if someone pays 50% of a debt’s face value when the investor purchased it for just 3%, the investor is still making a return on investment of 1,666%!

But I've also found cases where 'Goldman Sachs pays 60 cents in [sic] the dollar for the debt'.

So, consumer loans? They get dumped for ~25% typically, and if they're old or swap hands enough quickly reach pennies-on-the-dollar. Enterprise/bank loans something like ~40-50% if they're not totally toxic. And those which are get dumped so many times that they reach pennies-on-the-dollar status.. Makes me wonder if I should've gotten into the buying toxic debt business.

*Loans that are considered dead weight by the lender, too expensive to maintain/litigate over, etc

We also sometimes have Jackfruit here - enormous weird spikey fruit that can reach up to 36kg in weight.
