PROTEST THE HERO AND INTERVALS ARE GONNA BE PLAYING A CONCERT TOGETHER ON MARCH 22 THAT I COULD GO SEE. PROG BANDS ARE GOING TO ACTUALLY BE PHYSICALLY CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ME TO GO TO THEIR CONCERTS. TWO CRAZY AWESOME PROG BANDS AT THE SAME CONCERT RIGHT NEAR ME OH MAN EEEEEEEE~~~~~~~~~*flails arms in fangirling*

I shit you not, I was originally looking up the concert for Protest the Hero and finding that THE Intervals was gonna be there too literally prompted me to start squealing. And there's also a Tool concert 2 days later. I need to go to these concerts. Ohmagerd. BRB, squealing some more. I'm rather excited.

*Cough* I don't like to be that guy, but those aren't prog bands. ;_; More like Melodic Hardcore, but I'm kindof a prog purist. Moreso with PTH, Intervals is a more 'hardcore'-like kind of melodic hardcore metal.. Bands like this include Animals as Leaders and such, which rules. And I get into genre debates all the damn time with ex-band mates, so I can't help meself.

God, genres suck. Mostly because I say something like that ^ and feel like I'm speaking nonsense.

Tool is very definitely prog though, it's just hard to define where the line really is.. Especially when you have bands like Necrophagist/Suffocation putting down insane songs with crazy weird song structure, yet are just called Death Metal.  ???

Oh, and Immaterial, 'prog' is just a shorthand term for 'progressive rock'.

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”

I want to say it's bands that include tuning forks as an instrument, though I guess that would be the prong sort of band.

I know what I did was the wrong thing to do.  All questions of rules aside, it was a stupid gamble.  The fact that I got away scott free and victorious does not mitigate that gamble.

But there are times when the luster of honor overtakes you.  And if those moments, there is no question of right and wrong, good and bad, wise and stupid.  There's just you, your opponent, and the arena.  And in those moments, there is no decision to be made, because there is only one option presented to you.

That option is: Drop the fucking hammer.

And there is no high in the world like making a stupid gamble, no matter how minor, and coming away victorious.

Eh. Genres are really just to get the idea of what the band's general style of music is. I'd consider both bands to be more technical and musically innovative than say, a thrash metal or hard rock band, so they fit in progressive metal more than a hardcore band like Alexisonfire, off the top of my head. PtH lyrical style and writing also defines them as more progressive, in my opinion. The writing and song structure of the Kezia album is great. They aren't as insane as math metal or technical death metal, sure, but I can't really get into technical-for-technical's-sake music.

Either way I'm totally gonna try to go to that concert. The guitars man. The lead guitars. The tapping and lead solos and rhythm and aaaaaah I'm geeking out at the thought of seeing it all live.

Watch me crush another person's exictement!

What's a prog band?

For Prog Rock, listen to "King Crimson", specifically their first album "In the Court of the Crimson King". That's a good example.

It's also forty five years old, which really calls into question the label "Progressive Rock".  It was certainly different compared to other rock in 1969.

And still is different from any rock 'rock' now.

In fact, I think rock has been dead for a while. It got portioned out to subgenre after subgenre that all we have left in generic 'rock' is.. Nothing..

As much as I love The Court of the Crimson King, there might be a good reason for that.  Rock was going to some dark places around 1970.

Once upon a time, Blue Oyster Cult was the epitome of Prog Rock.  Then the 80s happened, and everything original was run into the ground.  Such is the cycle of creativity.

There's plenty of underground progressive bands that didn't suck during/after the 80's!

From Valdis Story, heh. Fires a fairly sizable fireball at stuff, iirc. Not the most useful of assist critters, but... cannon panda is canon. Is pretty great.
