I made myself a rather awesome desktop background randomizer by reusing/repurposing another Rainmeter skin.

Now, if only I can get it so the icons are on top of it, instead of making it transparent (although it does make a neat effect on screen).

EDIT:
Okay, whether it obscures the icons or not, having it on 50% transparency, and with the set of backgrounds I'm applying to it (on top of the cloudy background I'm using right now), it looks really freaking cool.

I kinda have it set so that it randomizes every 30 minutes.

Much of the time, the image also overlays the taskbar.

The cloudy image in the background behind the background; I took that with my camera recently.

EDIT:
I just realized something. This little rainmeter skin is also stackable. Meaning I can clone the INI file, and have utter chaos on screen with a bunch of parts randomly randomizing. Every 5 seconds one set randomizes, every 20 seconds another would, and so on; stacked up to maybe 5 of them. Ugh.

Now then, if I can make random pieces that link together and have a random character appear every iteration... This can lead to some awesome ideas. Oh, and I also forgot, transparent cutout images can be used.

Just wondering here, but is that essentially the same thing as the background changing that comes with windows 7 or does yours do more complex stuff than just swapping out images?

It just randomizes images, and has them rescaled to fit my resolution. And being a rainmeter skin, I can set the transparency and position of it and what layer (according to other rainmeter skins) it lies in. This is the lowest setting I have it on unfortunately. And it seems "On Desktop" isn't on desktop enough. The icons are covered. I had to set the skin to "Click Through" so I can still use my desktop. I tried finding workarounds. No luck.

EDIT:
And I truly advise against setting the randomizer to switch every milisecond. Ugh. And it also turns it into a resource hog.

I layered the image overlays. Even with the base background image, adding 2 overlays gets a bit confuzzling.
