Surely there'd be a celebration about being independent from Spain? I dunno.

Here, it's 26th January, which was the first day we were considered a country and not a colony. 26/01/1901.

We recently celebrated 200 years of monarchy, which could be seen as being independent from France I guess. It was never celebrated before as far as I know though  .
A Google search of "onafhankelijkheidsdag" (independence day) had "Independence Day (VS)" (US) as a first result...

We do celebrate liberation day (from Nazi Germany) but I doubt that's a unique thing.

Similar, though different to liberation day, we have ANZAC Day (April 25), and Remembrance Day (September something)

My happy thing is that there is no school tomorrow because of independence day.

Even with the student benefit, it's 1 € per meal at least around here. I can get at least 50% cheaper homemade meals.

A social democracy/welfare nation with a large economic focus on education. With the same amount I could spend on an extra serving of fries at a fast food place or on a bottle of Coca-Cola I can buy a well-rounded meal that'll last me a day.

At least you have a country that cares about the student population.

Until they start forcing you into student loans. That's where wind is blowing these days. Less student benefits, more loans. Oh and shorten education. Because managing to fit courses that don't collide with each other wasn't hard enough. Then you still have to work on the side, homework to finish, projects to hand in, deadlines to meet...

Anyway, less sad and RAEG. More happy:

New pair of shoes! New socks! Thanks tax refund! And in the nick of time too as snow is coming. The old ones had barely soles left. The shoes and socks were getting holier by the day. All that snow would've frozen my feet off.

So, normally, every Thursday I go to a non-mandatory seminar a students' group organizes at my faculty, since it's pretty cool, usually. But my Chemistry lab was ridiculous (I had to redo a whole titrimetry because I screwed it up the first time. Another hour worth of frustration, yaaay), so I completely forgot to go there today.

Guess what, I check the class email and it turns out it was called off!

On the topic of independence days, we have them here in Central America, when we got freed from Spain (but not before they stole all our gold and resources + killed 90% of the natives).

I don't think that matters so much as how it's still an official government holiday that kids get the day off school for.
