Still reading through Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, and I came across this one.
Poor Navi, she takes so much crap. I've always thought of her annoyingness as being from being bullied when she was young by her fellow fairies. As a result, she never really developed any social skills, and instead spent all her time studying the monsters of Hyrule, explaining how she knows the weak point of just about everything you come across, something Tatl doesn't do. Navi being so bullied that she became bitter at her own race would also explain why she doesn't bat an eyelash if Link shoves her kin into airtight glass jars until they develop Stockholm Syndrome, later sacrificing them to extend his own life. And I think that Tatl only puts up with that is because... well, she's kinda dumb.

The Colony Wars series and Destruction Derby series also ate up lots of my mid teen years - worth a look, especially Colony Wars 2 (which is dark, has a dynamic campaign and kinda hard too, as well as pretty if you like "Homeworld"esqe graphics) and Destruction Derby Raw (which is silly, over the top, and you get to buy cars to trash)

Avoid CW: Red Sun, however.
