I'm not sure, every time I look it is a cake again.
I wonder if this is what blindsight feels like?

Nah, that's exactly how I see it. I've never seen it as a parrot when it was mentioned before.

The rose is an eye, and the two black leaves coming off of it make the beak--right?
This changed it all. Just avert your eyes a bit to the side of it and it comes up as a bird-ish figure.

...Blindsight? Don't you mean peripheral vision?

There is a thing called blindsight, where as people with functioning eyes can still react to things, but because of some type of brain they can't actually see.
So the fact that I 'knew' I was looking at a bird, but couldn't actually give a proper description might be similar?

That blindsight thing is because their eyes work perfectly fine, it's just the visual cortex doesn't work.

Sight data travels through some other parts of the brain that DO work fine, though, so they 'see' it that way.

Anyway, the rose is the ruffled feathers of the beak of parrots. The eye is the leaf to the top-right of the rose, and the bottom two leaves are the beak.

The bird obsession continues... but how deep does the woodpecker hole go?

No no, don't look down at the cakebird, look back up here. I'm going to tell you about this cool thing our brains and eyes do, where we recognize light and dark patches that aren't fully in our focus, and processes them as monochrome silhouettes. The simplified visual information is then checked against other silhouettes of possible threats, like "Wolf" or "Mugger" in our brains, which is usually used to trigger a Fight or Flight response. It turns light/dark blobs into other silhouettes too, like the cakebird. You might even be getting the afterimage as you read this. Depends on the size of your screen.

Visual information is actually faster to transmit to the brain when simplified this way, so it improves our threat-recognition time. We see the thing, register it, and prepare ourselves to react before we can actually think about it. But, it also causes us to make scary things out of shadows. And apparently birds out of cakes?

Whatever, brains are awesome!

... yeah, with that overlay my brain's going more "is that a shrimp? That looks like a shrimp. Maybe crawfish? Lobsters come in blue and white, right?". Not registering it as parrot at all. Or bird, really. Unless maybe flamingo...? I think mostly because that doesn't really have the shape that I'm used to for parrots. Beak's too small, not curved/scissory enough.

The rose isn't the eye, you sillies. The bottom leaves are the black beak, the top leaf is the eye, and the rose is the little feathery/fleshy bit pigeons have on what I suppose is their nose (where the feathers meet the beak).

Like so:

From the corner of the eye, the two on the bottom blur together, while the one up top becomes a visible eye, and the rose becomes the nose bit. Its head appears to be rather wide, hence fat pigeon.

I think the database of shapes is going to vary from person to person. It's an innate response, but the mental shape-database is a learned thing. I still see my distressed and derpy swan, but to each their own Cakebird.

I still can't see it. :P Every time I look at it all I see is a fancy white top hat. (My brain just seems to work that way. Once I see a picture in the "right" way it is almost impossible for me to see it in the wrong one ever again).

Also that blurred image is freaking my eyes out.

That is because you are looking at it. As long as you look at the cakebird, all you will ever see is a hat.

Once it's identified as a hat in my head my brain holds onto that picture though. So even if I just see it out of the corner of my eye, my brain still knows it's a hat, even if it can't really tell what it looks like from what it's currently seeing.

The hat is a lie. You must believe in The Cakebird with all your heart. Only then can you know True Cakebirdyness.
