The Latin prefix 'philo' means love.
'Philosophy' literally translated to the study of love.  :)

That's actually Greek, not Latin :P

And 'philosophy' actually means 'love of wisdom' ('love to study' if you want to overinterpret it), not the other way :P

Really? Wait does this mean the suffix '-mancer' is also Greek?
Have I been fucking up on my mythical occupation titles by mixing my Latin prefixes with a Greek suffix? Dammit, those fantasy wizards are not going to like the news...

I really need to learn Latin...

'mancer' comes from "manteia" in Greek, which means 'divination'

Reminds me of Mance Rayder, that bad ass from Game of Thrones who was totally ignored in the tv series.

Mancer is like cancer just man instead of metal.

Mancer is less metal than cancer.

And cancer is not very metal at all :-\

Actually if the suffix 'mancer' is somebody who mealy divines from from 'prefix', what is the Greek term used for having power or control over 'prefix'?

-crat. From the Ancient Greek krateia. Would sound a bit weird to call a fire mage a pyrocrat. I like the ring of "necrocrat" though.

Pyrocrat, hydrocrat, biocrat... I think it works pretty damn well!
Sorry frost mages, cryocrat is a bit off... Chronocrat, however, is dead sexy.

EDIT: Wait, Chronomancy, to tell the future based off... What happens over time. So to just watch something. Amazing.

Don't worry, they're getting Mance in the next series.

-crat as a back formation of -cracy is more of a "rules by" than has control over. Compare plutocrat or technocrat.

Perhaps -crator would be better, to mimic the usage in e.g. Christ Pantocrator(ruler of/over all).

Necrocrator... See that sounds more like a position of office.
I would expect to find 'Derralith the Necrocrator' as the boss of a dungeon, not a playable class.

Yes, Greek translates directly to game concepts.

Chronocrat sounds like some time-based bureaucrat. Perhaps a time-policeman.
