Netbook games
« on: September 20, 2009, 03:34:10 pm »

I'm currently looking for some diversions for on my new netbook, internet searches all bog down in infinite register traps or at online game sites.

That is  not what I desire.

My desire is for simple (preferably indie) games that can run on a netbook and are free (or donation sponsored), preferably involving a measure of strategy (or tactics) but not too much timing or fingerfleetness.

I understand that classics such as starcontroll2 or starcraft etc are possible, but really I'd like to try out some newish games.

ps DF does not run in fullscreen mode, it might however in windowed mode.

A netbook is just a normal laptop. Mine has the same specs of a full-size laptop I bought four years prior. You can play any of the mid-range games from that time. I installed Linux so I can't vouch for this, but my laptop ran Oldblivion at a playable rate, so I'm betting a netbook could do the same.

http://www.bourdeaux.net/eeepc/ nice guide to some games running at lower resolutions with a few simple hacks. Intended for EEEpcs but should work on most similar netbooks

seems I was cool enough to choose a 'multimedia'netbook,
so now I am blessed with a widescreen 10" screen messing up most games resolution.

Some games such as Baldurs Gate II seems to have a hack adapting the screen resolution, but I cannot find a working link to that hack-file. :(

A netbook isn't quite a normal laptop. For starters, the screen resolution is really wonky.

I enjoy the open source adaptation of colonization, FreeCol, on my EEE 900. It took a bit of fiddling with the sourcecode and recompiling, but it works fine now with just a few minor graphical glitches in the colony screen.

If I could only have found a netbook with a -normal- screen resolution, perhaps I would've bought that.

Of course, in retrospect, that seems hypocritical, as the laptop I did end up buying has this irksome 1366 x 768 resolution, which does occasionally cause problems. Luckily, it's powerful enough to run modern games which can handle such a resolution admirably.

VGA planets 4 - runs without issues, but screenresolution gives severe playability problems.

I applaud your taste.  ;D

There are some there I don't know, thanks.

Xcom is certainly a candidate, may even go retro and install lasersquad. ;)
Now installing BS4ever.

BS4ever is a bust: cursor will not go to the lower 1/5th of the screen. :(
Now trying anachreon, sounds interesting. ...it is, though the controlls are a bit unyieldy.

BTW: In case you are tempted, I might as well forewarn you of the games I liked but didnt work for me (as it is a pain in the ass to install games on a netbook as it is)

- Medieval: Total war: the first one, that is. Some claimed it worked just fine. For me, it was crawlishly slow. Not "unplayable", but "playable in a very annoying an un-fun manner". Not worth it, IMHO.

- Paradox games in general: Two words: screen scroll.

If you like old games, they still have BF 1943 the Original out there.

... 1942 I hope you mean. And heck yes it is pretty awesome, although the AI... aaaargh. I hate it.  They can snipe you from a mile away, steal all the vehicles, and when they're on your team, run to their deaths with incredible efficiency.

And because I'm seeing very strange things stated here...
Netbooks are laptops.  They're just smaller.
Screen resolutions will be different, of course.
Full-screen apps will lynch you, but if you run windowed, there shouldn't be any problems (as long as you meet the minimum specs, of course)
