Can a noble punish... HIMSELF?
« on: September 20, 2009, 12:25:10 am »

My trader-noble has made a mandate for Large Gems. At present, he is the fort's only gem cutter and the most skilled gem setter. If he fails his own mandate, he may well be forced to sentence HIMSELF to severe beatings and jail time.

However, I have an immigrant gem setter who he may be able to blame... I'll also have to scan the other dwarves to make sure none of them have gem cutting skill. Once these interlopers are located and eliminated, we'll see what happens...

I'll keep you updated.

You should kill everybody except this noble, just to make sure some random soapmaker isn't punished.

You need to be certain.

I don't think nobles can punish themselves, but this will be an interesting thing to test.

Totally random dwarfs can also be punished.

As this dwarf has a occupation he also isn't a proper noble.  It would be interesting to see what would happen if you killed all your dwarves after getting a count/duke/baron and seeing what happens when a mandate falls through.

I would test this myself but my dwarves are on such friendly terms that the whole fort would tantrum if a single one of them died.

I think nobles punishing themselves was a bug that Toady already got rid of, but I'm not sure.

What I know is is that my current sheriff/major likes to mandate for copper items, copper spears, copper doors for her rooms, etc. and I have no copper and also can't buy any.

The only dwarf with any metalworking skill is the smith I originally took with me on embark... and he is her (the majors) husband.

As of now something like 5 mandates have failed, which resulted in two beatings (random farmers who died) and 3 dwarves going to jail for 20 - 50 days (one of them is said metalworking husband, the other two were farmers again).

Coincidence? I think not.  ;D

Holy crap, you found a map with no copper? And why can't you order any copper? Liaisons dead? How about the kobolds? Catch a few of them and melt down their daggers.

Huh, no copper? Weird.
On my current fort, I have the misfortune to have a Tax Collector who likes Adamantine.
There is none on the map.

I built my fortress on an island located in a freshwater lake (it's a 7x11 embark covering the whole island.. ). That means no liaisons, no caravans, no goblins, orks, kobolds or even immigrants. I'm up to 80+ dwarves now, 50 or so of them are children. Also: 10 tame dogs (thanks to massive incest), 5 tame elephants (and about a million wild ones that cover the entire southern part of the island... yeah).

Did I mention that there are at least 3 massive Magnetite clusters? But yeah, my wannabe "noble" just can't take cheap and inferior iron, she has to get delicious copper.

EDIT: It's true though, copper is dirty cheap usually... I once replaced all wooden barrels of a mature fortress with copper ones... it was a lot of work but I finally got rid of all the copper   :D

The last two flatlands forts I ran had tons of iron, tin, and flux but no copper at all...

Copper is surprisingly rare. I don't see it unless I'm in marble or limestone, usually. I typically avoid igneous extrusive maps, which are home to native copper, because they're low in iron. And tetrahedrite doesn't show up very often for supposedly being in 'every stone.'
