To Dual/Multi Core computer users on windows
« on: September 19, 2009, 08:43:39 pm »

Wouldn't it be great if DF ran on multiple cores?

Well, I can't offer that. Sorry.

What I can offer, though, is a little application I found on the net.

SMP SeeSaw

If you are dual core, just grab the regular version. If you are multi-core, grab the Pro version. Both are free, both are only 100 kB in size.

Run dwarf fortress, run SMP Seesaw, click on Dwarfort.exe in the 'both cores' column, hit 'Isolate in CPU 1' and voila! Everything is in 0, DF is in 1. No need to futz in task manager, or select which application might happen to be more CPU intensive than the other.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I had that problem in Firefox. Right click and 'save target as'. Rename it to .msi if it saves as a HTML. It'll work then.

Can you use the program to reverse it? So, when we turn off DF, can we set it so that all programs use all cores?

Yes. Once you close DF, just click on the first program in CPU 0, then SHIFT+click the last one (so that all of them are selected) and choose 'move to both'. Done.

Does this actually improve anyones FPS? I dont get a single frame out of doing this, seems like the only time it would be useful is when you are running other highly cpu intensive programs.

We need some damn multithreading :/

Ya, no noticable difference on my machine. My guess is unless you are trying to run DF and Crysis at the same time, it's not gonna do much for you.

I've noticed no difference, but I don't have a functioning fort at 100+ dorfs right now and I've got a nice fast processor anyway (AMD2 6400 GHz DC).  It also may help if you like your fps at some ungodly number like 2000.  I'll test this either later tonight or tomorrow when I can find some time.  If someone has a fort with 100+ dorfs that they can put on DFFD so I can test that quicker it would be much appreciated.

Try rubbing a cat on it, that seems to help.

Checked it out, and it's different because the program's "isolate to..." function allows you to set dwarf fortress to one core, and everything else to the remaining ones, with a single menu command.
