Gaming Blogs

I like reading blogs of gaming culture critics. Well, recently atleast.

I found this one, his articles are pretty neat to read:

I'm fairly sure we all know this one, but he's both insightful and hilarious.

This article is my favorite right now, reading it.

It talks about how Newer Generation gamers brag about how long they've played instead of how good they actually are.
"Them young un's don't know how was back in the day when everything was impossibly hard!" I pretty much disagree with most of the stuff here, but then, I didn't grow up in that generation.

Hey, I didn't say I approve or disapprove of it.  I just said I was interested with it.

I know, I'm just saying that I find arcade games to be time sinks, not new games. Sounds like nostalgia's creeping up on him.

It was an interesting read, but I can't say it didn't fill me with a little internet rage. If he thinks old games were always skill and never timesinks, dude has obviously never played Dragon Warrior. (In fact, I think WoW was the only RPG he even mentioned...)

Many old games were huge time sinks, weren't they?  Like, Pokemon.  First game came out in 1996, which is ancient in video game years.

Hmm, didn't realise pokemon would have such a weird looking pronunciation (poʊkeɪmɒn).

dude... I was thinking about that...

All RPGs are time sinkers in one way or another...  But if you can learn something from them like tactics or logical thinking (plus, you're having fun) they're worth it.

That said... MMORPGs don't really entice me.  I usually get the feeling that they're like jobs... Whoever dedicates more time to a boring, repetitive chore will get more rewards.  I already have a job... I play games for leisure.  :P

I agree with the article that games need to be based on skill and not be entirely time sinks.  Anyway, he seems to be a bit nostalgic and forget that there were many time sinks then and that there are many skill based games now.

That's not to say that it's entirely bad.  There is some tactical thinking in pokemon, and you will normally need to make good decisions.  There is the possibility of just training your pokemon to 10 levels higher than they need to be, however, and then romping through most of the game :P.  However, at least they don't take too long to train, and it's not necessary to get them all the way to 100 or whatever to complete the game.

MMORPGs on the other hand... I dunno.  Maybe it's useful practise if you're going to be getting a dull job in future...
