Traps will trigger on dwarves that are unconcious, prone or otherwise incapacitated.
Build the cage and let the poor guy out.

Though you might want to check and make sure the dwarf is yours.  I had a bit of Fun once when I let a trapped axedwarf out of a cage in my dining hall and it turned out he wasn't one of my guards who had gotten unlucky in the last goblin siege, but instead one of the goblin's kidnapped and brain washed minions.

Dwarves don't fall asleep on cage traps unless they collapse from exhaustion or something.

Was it one of your own dwarves, or was it previously the leader of a goblin squad?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

There's also a chance it could be a dwarf that arrived with a caravan, if your trade depot is close to your cage traps like mine was.  I built the cage and scheduled to have him released but no one would ever release him.

They fell asleep on a cage trap, would be my first guess. It's a relatively normal occurrence, relatively normal to the standards of Dwarf Fortress, that is.

This doesn't happen in 40d, I think. It's one of the bugs Toady fixed some time ago.

Exhaustion won't do it in 40d.  If all available tiles are trapped or otherwise unsleepable, dorfs will stay awake until they go stark raving mad instead.

Really? That's excellent news!  Other than traps what things are unsleepable?

So, in other words, I could build sleep deprivation chambers to keep my nobles entertained?  Master engravings on the walls, golden statues, the finest food and drink, and NO UNTRAPPED SQUARE FOR HIM TO TAKE A NAP.

Watch him go from happily drinking wine and admiring statues to realising slowly that he can't fall asleep, and going nuts bit by bit...

Oh yes.

... ninja'ed.

But regardless, dude, that idea is EPIC. I'm totally stealing it.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

Oh yes.

That's actually perfect. The noble has everything he or she wants... but can't sleep.

It's like, I dunno, Saw, or something.

Especially if it's covered in weapon traps so that if when the noble eventually loses it, things get messy.
