I need a new tablet.
« on: September 19, 2009, 03:19:19 am »

So basically right after I drew the stuff for Deadliest Dwarf, my tablet's pen decided it would be a good time to murder itself. So here I am with fingers itching to draw things and without anything to draw them on except paper.

I'm figuring on buying a new tablet instead of getting a replacement pen, because my current one is a Genius 3x4 inch piece of kaka.

Anyone have suggestions on tablets? My price range is tiny. My Genius tablet cost me P1700, which comes to about $38 (in USD). I could probably spring for a tablet that costs up to $80, but I'd like to hear what the forum's tablet-users have to say about the tablet brand they use. (online testimonials just don't cut it.)

That Genius tablet I was talking about is the cheapest thing on the market, I think. It's also terrible.

Well, we have this local brand called CD-R KING which probably could sell me a cheaper tablet but I'm afraid it'll blow up in my hands.

Look for a Genius tablet for a cheap one. For best, probably Wacom. But I don't know for sure. :(

Like IWM says, it's the Philippines. Although Mexico also uses Pesos.

Well, I'll just search for Japan-made tablets.

Fully compatible with Mac, of course :P

But yeah, the price will soak up the sky!

The lowest line Wacom tablets I know of are Bamboo tablets. Mine is a 5.8x3.7 inch and works fine for me. But generally Wacom is better than anything else out there, even their lower-line tablets.
Last time I did research on mine it was a good $80-$90, so that could be within range.

Hm... I could definitely spare a little extra cash for a decent tablet.

I did see a Bamboo at the computer store where I bought my current tablet, but I decided to be a cheapskate.

Yay me. ::)

I use a Wacom tablet, and is very pleased with it. I can't be bothered to check up the exact model right now, but I think it's "intus3" or something along those lines, and the drawing surface is like half an A4 (that's... A5 I think?). It might be a bit to expensive thou.

I was mucking around in the mall earlier, saw a CD-R KING A4 sized tablet, a 14" one, and a 5x3 one. Still looking for a Bamboo, if I can't find one I'll probably spring for that 5x3 one, since it's the only one I can afford.

I feel i should point out that any tablet that costs less than about ~150 - 200$ is going to be a piece of crap.

With that in mind, if you can locate a Wacom or one of their subsidary brands (Bamboo etc), that'll be your best bet. A crappy Wacom tablet will be substantially less crappy than any of the other brands, although it'll still suck.

And Armok, the model you're thinking of is "Intuos3". They're the previous generation of Wacom tablets (current generation is Intuos4). The Intuos series falls between the Bamboo (cheap and crappy) and the Cintiq (expensive and awesome). They're basically the mid-range tablets taht Wacom offer, although top end Intuos tablets are arguably superior to bottom end Cintiq tablets.

I did see a Cintiq last week in the same mall. P60,000 is way out of my price range.

That's about $1330 I think.

Low end Cintiq's will run you to about 800 dollaroos, high end Cintiq's will run well past 2000 dollaroos.

Intuos tablets run from ~200 dollaroos up to around 1000 dollaroos. Bamboo tablets seem to run from around 40 dollaroos to somewhere up around 200 dollaroos.

Of course prices vary from region to region due to exchange rates, import tax and the general asshattery that goes on with these kind of luxury products. But with tablets, as with most things, you most definitely get what you pay for. Buy a cheap tablet, and you get a cheap tablet, with everything that entails.

Wacoms are the best, but I would still recommend going for at least a Graphire - the lower models are toys more than tools. It's a little more expensive, but I've had my Graphire 3 for years and years and years and the only thing that ever went wrong with it were the rubber pads on the bottom. The thing's bloody indestructible.

You do know that the Graphire models are basically not much different from the Intuos models, except they're wireless?

If you want wireless and\or plan on doing alot of drawing while on the move, such as in a plane or whatever, then a Graphire is handy, but unless you're planning on dragging your tablet around alot you get better value with an Intuos.

Ach, you beat me to it. I got a Bamboo Big (like, $20 extra and it is a fair bit larger screen-wise) and I love it.
