For some reason I can't get the idea out of my head that somewhere, in the infinite number of dimensions and universes, that every single thing that's happening in dwarf fortress is happening there.
Thats because our world could also be a simulation.

Dwarf fortress is as real as this one.

I don't take any cats or dogs with me/ leave them outside, and butcher the other animals. (Cows, mules, etc.)
Then I dump the bi-products of said animals over the side of the fortress with a bridge-apult.
Some unlucky guy was standing in the same tile that a barrel of cow fat landed.

I just like to be a perfectionist.
I like to know exactly what is in my fortress and expel all alien items.
Only plump helmets, plump helmet seeds, barrels, and plump helmet drinks.
Everything else food related flying over the cliff's edge.

I always feel toasty inside after getting rid of unnecessary things.
I have the buckets separated out into their own stock pile, and the clothes items of the dead will eventually be dumped into the magma once I find it.

Who am I kidding, I already know where it is (visual fortress),
I just don't have a good excuse to bee-line a tunnel over to it.

But I don't want to genuinely harm them, I just want to ignore them and leave them to their own wills...
I personally think that is worse.

What would you rather do:

1. Stand around until you starve to death or are killed by another who went insane--might take a couple of months
2. Be instantly burned alive for all of 4 seconds until you are nothing but carbon in molten rock

But the end goal is to create a small fortress with a tiny population.
I shouldn't have to create a huge lava shower chamber to systematically slaughter them.
It's much easier to give them a field, and some seeds and just wish them luck.
I'd rather give them a chance than pursue the killing of them.

The use of 'magma' is merely a metaphor for 'instant death' which could be a DAS or something similar.

I personally make a long 'entrance' into my fort and just put a DAS and meeting space at the end of it. Simple, and effective.

Sounds like a good idea.
But what about when you need somebody to be outside?
I've used my outsiders a couple of times, and I need to take a few from their ranks every now and again in order to replenish the inside people.

It just serves my purposes better to let them live.

When that happens, it goes from being the "hermit" challenge, to the "recluse" challenge. Build the outsiders a fortress too. let them live, give them all of that whatever they need to live. farms, the whole lot. don't raise a military, let them get slaughtered by goblins, then you can let your hermits go out and grab all of their trade goods.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

I sometimes do this, and make the outsiders do all jobs with a 5x5 farm and a couple of stills. If I am feeling particularly creative, I make a Gym and let them get super-strong and when the gobbos come they get wrestled to death. :P

I neglected to mention that I have a door that I keep closed that I can open to let them inside. So, I can let them in if I so choose--which is not that often.

I have taken to having moats around my fortress lately though... Oh so simple to make, and makes it much more interesting when the gobbos come.

I have a huge drawbridge on a lever for when I need to let them in.
I'm trying to get the outside dwarfs to build a super door filled airlock.
That way I can pause the game as a few flow into the building, separate out the ones I want,
and do as I wish with the others. (Usually release them)

But they are far too insane to build it.
So I'm just going to wait until more refuse to immigrate, then lower the bridge and build it myself.
You know, so when the remaining dwarfs have lived long enough and well enough, I can start getting more.

Also, I'm building all of the rooms up on stalk-towers, so eventually, the ground level will be off limits.
I already have the barracks up on a stalk, now my super cube dining hall is half way done too.
