Strange Truths
« on: September 18, 2009, 08:10:27 pm »

I was playing DF today, when a strange problem arose,
a strange answer ran over to greet it,
and then I connected all of it to emotional response...

and felt bad enough to save scum the problem away.

Here is the dilemma:
I have a fortress with (as some of you may already know) a population of 3 dwarfs.
There are technically 18 dwarfs, the others 15 all wandering around starving outside. (With a berserk diplomat on the loose)

Earlier in my game, while the outsiders were still fresh out of an immigration wave,
I had them tile out a bit of stone on the side of my sealed-off fortress.

Then, I got this new idea, which I rather liked.
I implemented it all over the fortress, all except for that one spot with the missing stone.
In order to make symmetry, I realized, I would for a short time have to open my fortress wall.
This of course was a no-no.
So then I got this idea.
I would assert whatever control I could over the starving and dying outside dwarfs,
and have them build up a wall to block the future opening.

That is when I realized how horrible it was, to make the dying dwarfs build a wall, with their last bit of sanity and strength,
that would ensure future generations of their kind could never access the fortress they all dreamed about.

I typed a lowercase b, then a capital C.
With reluctance I typed a lowercase 'w', followed by two or three presses of the u key.
Then I reached for my enter key, just as I was about to hit it, I decided not to.

I sat for a moment, just looking at my hands.

I knew what to do. How to set things right.
I promptly pressed that three key combo sacred to all gamers.
Crisis averted.

Pah, you are not a true dwarf. Even if you hadn't save-scummed, you would still not be a true dwarf! MAGMA is the true way, not "locking them outside."

But I don't want to genuinely harm them, I just want to ignore them and leave them to their own wills...

I'm having trouble not reading that as free verse.

Now that you mention it, I think I was thinking in free-verse.
Probably because I was reading too much XKCD...

You could have them build a crude outdoor settlement to live in.  I did that with all my immigrants in one fort.

Those that survived enough elf raids and goblin attacks, or reached legendary in some skill I wanted, were even allowed to come inside!

I've actually thought about doing that.
I mean, they already have their own mason's shop to make their own graves, and a trade depot to sell away all the possessions of their dead... It wouldn't be too big a stretch to give then a well and a field...

As for another truth, you are now aware all dwarves get buried naked.

I suggest you have them build a few small homes or something on the surface, or at least put down a food stockpile and have them train herbalism.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?

Actually it was dwarf fortress that taught me to not care for the fate of non real people.

Well, I couldn't even bring myself to tag the animals as butcher-able... A migrant butcher came up though (with a tanner), so I might start, but it isn't easy...

For some reason I can't get the idea out of my head that somewhere, in the infinite number of dimensions and universes, that every single thing that's happening in dwarf fortress is happening there.

Its why I make sure my hammerer has a *nice* set of rooms to spend the rest of his pitiful existence locked in.  Sometimes I even pit an animal he likes in there.

Though it was a bit odd when the lone cow in his room with him started having calves...

Thats because it is the fate of everyone who plays dwarf fortress to be reincarnated as a dwarf in a fortress of their own creation immediately after death.
