Not surprising. Most people in California have probably never seen snow, and if they have, probably only on a freak day that nobody remembers.

Since you're a Freshman, you're essentially moving into a prison colony filled with beer-addled imbeciles who worship machismo.  Bring something that establishes your dominance.  Me, I hung a giant Jolly Roger over my bed and put my defused grenades on display.  The Floor Rep was afraid of me, and my roommate stayed the hell on his side on the room.

Alternatively, disguise yourself as part of the herd; get a plastic viking helmet with removable horns (so you can chug out of them), steal an empty keg or two from a local pub, and get 10 or so posters of Megan Fox to plaster on the walls. 

In all seriousness though, if you are sharing a room, bring good headphones. Noise cancelling are the ones you want. There will be times when you will need them.

I have Sennheiser HD202 headphones. DJ headphones with ungodly noise canceling.

I want a Jolly Roger to hang over my bed. ;_;
