Filtering out carp to avoid "fun" water.
« on: September 18, 2009, 04:47:38 pm »

So, I just embarked on a new area, I didn't notice it was a river instead of a brook I started with. And to my horrors, the river was, and is still, filled with almost thousands of carp.
So I thought I could maybe punch a hole into the river, leading it through fortifications to filter out them' carp. Alas, I saw a carp swim around on the wrong side of the fortification  :(
Is it possible to make a carp-proof filter somehow? If I run dry on booze, and my dwarfs need a drink, and all my lakes are dry, I would like to rely on the river. But, without the carp if possible :)

A grate has always done the trick in Abbeyverse.

If all else fails though, put a powered pump to pump water from the river into whatever cistern/ditch you ant to use and stick a well feeding off that. Pumps even magically desalinate if done right. :)

Alright, thanks a lot ;D

Might also create a huge fishtank for them now that I've got the chance, the elves will surely enjoy it  ::)

As a precaution, dig some ramps in the edges of the river. It's not so much that the carp are dangerous, but that your dwarves jump into the water to fight them. Where they promptly drown.
