Those are good, Hungry.  Do you have a tablet?  Because I think some variation in line-weights (thickness and thinness) would add a lot (like on that cave-spider drawing, especially).  I've heard very great artists say that effective variation in line-weight can add as much to a drawing as color.

Here's another sketchy dwarf.  A hammerdwarf, I think.  Very sketchy, though.

Another, and no I use a mouse....a rare occurance, I apearently might be the only one...

was going to use more varient to line thickness, but I did that in less time then it took my do do any of the other ones...

Also that hammer dwarfs right arm is off somehow.

Also a tweek to the spider...

The tweek of the spider looks amazing.

What I've been doing lately (like with the dragon) is scanning in pencil sketches and then playing with layers in Photoshop.

Here's an example of a dwarf I did using this method:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I used the blur and smudge tools on the shading of the background layer to clean it up, burn and dodge tools to make it more visible, and then just a few layers in mutiply mode, some with textures and layer masks, to color it.  I used screen mode to get the gems to glow.
Can you see anything that could desperately use improvement? (I can, but I think that of anything I make.)

The body is out of proportion with the legs, I think. But other than that, no.

Ah.  Awesome.  The legs were intentional, see.  Dwarf, right?

Note that Hungry is an Anatomy Fanatic...that likes insects appearently...

I also have some rare survival books, cover-all anatomy volumes, field/captive guides; for insects, birds, fish, plants, lizards, mammals, and about anything else in the wide world of nature, making me both set for reference and remembered knowlege of nature to survive while stranded and make the vagueness of DF nature...seem VERY annoying.

I love 'improving' other pictures, so instead of making my own, I tried to make Deon's a bit smoother (hope you don't mind, Deon, I picked yours because it was already so awesome :D ). Well here it is. Basically what I did was go in and smudge all the cave walls together and I added some color to a few spots, I tried to highlight the crystal a bit.

another tweek to the spider, with more lean towards improving the dwarf.

Alright everybody - I'm still drawing but having a hard time with some other things so I haven't been able to get some scans up yet. Mostly just bodystructure/skull sketches.

Hungry: You've been very productive. Definitely the tweaked spider and dwarf is an improvement, the line weighting is handled much better and I think that gives them each a bit more character.

Balathustrius: Dayumson. I bet that arm will look fine once you get the handle of the hammer worked in.

LegoLord: If you can find a decent tutorial of doing line art with the pen tool in photoshop, you can "ink" your pencil drawings. This is pretty much the same process most modern comic books are done in. The image is drawn in pencile and scanned, 'inked' with the pen-tool, paying attention to line weight, and then colored using layers (probably multiply layers?).
The pen-tool can be frustrating but it is worth getting to know.

Edit: Inkscape. Its an opensource vector drawing program worth checking out. I've used it a bit and it seems pretty solid. It's basically an alternative to Adobe Illustrator.

Everyone: I think now might be a good time to figure out how we are going to deal with modifying the works of others. Should it be with or without permission? How far should a modified work be taken? Should we try to do more collaborations?

Hungry, Spreggo; thanks; and yes, the hand is wrong.  Arg.   :-[

Hungry: Definite improvements on the spider pic.  I still think even more pushing of line weights would only improve it, but it's great regardless.  Your tweak to the glowing pits picture is very eerie, but it looks really dark on my monitor.  (I did that one, btw.)

LegoLord:  Good dwarf; I like the design of his armor.  Legs may be a bit too short, even for a dwarf.

On the subject of modifying other's work, I have no objections to it where mine is concerned.  If someone wants their work to stay inviolate, maybe a note to that effect in their post?  And of course crediting the original artist is polite.  Collabs and overpaintings are great, though; I'm for them.
