I may start doing digital work.
joooiiinnn ussss...

At any rate, forgot to post this here I suppose.
Current WIP, a "tech-knight" of sorts, idea popped into my head at complete random with no proper provocation or rational connection.
Spoiler: a tad large (click to show/hide)
There's some minor issues with the armor I need to fix in the sketch, then I'll move on to finalizing the sketch and actually painting it.
The only real quandary I have now is if I'll do it more "airbrush" style or more solid-colored, any opinions on which would look better?
You can resize pictures in-browser by using the bb code
Code: [Select]
[img width=size height=size]url[/img]Clicking it will return it to it's normal size.

thanks for the welcoming you guys! here is a wip for a painting im working on:

thinking about moving the small dudes closer to the camera so i get to paint their scared faces..

jopax: that head is nice! you need to decide wich angle it is supposed to be though. the ear and forehead is angled from the top while most of the face is angled from the side. if you want to adjust it tho the foreheads angle, the eyebrow should cover the eye more and the mouth should go in under the nose.

its superlame, but very good practice to redraw it until everything is works perspective wise.

Yeah I thought that it was something about perspective, I tend to put the head in perspective and just tack the face on like whatever :S

About the last piece, consider shifting the perspective and viewpoint, it would probably need a redraw of most of the picture, but lowering it and moving it to the left would bring the people closer and make the monster more imposing and looming over them.

Tried practicing digital painting by copying this (from http://lovecastle.org/draw/) :
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But it started going really weird, so I left it as a WIP:

Sup guys? I have good news and bad news.

The good news is I made a creature that looks slightly better than things I have made before.
The bad news is that I still can't draw guns worth a damn.
This is a request drawing from somebody on the Starbound Forums.

(double posting because of 5 day difference in posts)

I have now drawn... something green.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yet another strange product of late night scribbling.

Any comments on the shading? it seems to be what I was focusing on while making this.

hey dudes, finally finished my piece:

bombzero, about the shading, i find it a lot easier to stick to one brush. preferably a hard on with some light textures on it. im not a big fan of the airbrushed look. it gets very muddy easily.

The shading (or rendering, or whatever the hell it is actually called) looks rather messy.
Take a look at this.
Also, here's a nice exercise — put an apple (or other fruit/vegetable/non-edible interesting object near your computer and paint it in Photoshop.

Thanks for the links, however I wasn't much going for extremely smooth shading or well, anything in particular at all, was just scribbling.

And in general, the more work I put into that airbrushed shading the smoother it looks, this was just a rather... quick? example but my typical method involves a lot of low opacity layers to give it a nice smooth look, that image had... maybe 4 total?

Urist: thanks! i thought of some kind of insect/troll mashup when i did it...

siquo: thanks! that was the effect i wanted!  :)

bombzero: this doesnt make sense; "Any comments on the shading? it seems to be what I was focusing on while making this." and then this "however I wasn't much going for extremely smooth shading or well, anything in particular at all, was just scribbling". you request comments and then reject them cuz you werent really trying? not cool man, not cool...

anyways smoothing with airbrush and using multiple layers with different opacity seems like a very unconvient way to work. i still think you shoul use hardbrushes.

stickadtroja: That is brilliant, I really love it.

So I apologise in advance for butchering your picture, but I had a thought (poorly demonstrated) that it would be improved with more 'mist' perhaps to suck you in to this ice-world a little more. I'm not very good at this, nevertheless, a few gradient fills later ... :

Trying to give it more 'depth of field', and highlight the scale of the creature and the structures - also a bit more contrast near the creatures face to help the eye ...

(sorry again about the slapdash sketch-over, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to get at :) )
