Speaking of speedpaints, I was in the mood to do something nice and pretty and cheerful. But that took too much time and effort and I didn't have the willpower to fight the damned heat and find the right composition.

So I did a B&W speedie to mess around with values and how they mean things :>

This has probably been posted a few times in this thread alone, but it's still a pretty good collection of thoughts. Have a look and see if you can pick something that might help with the shiny stuff.

I'd mainly say bring out some sharp highlights on the sharper edges.

Jopax, they are all truly great, but I feel like you need more contrast!
It sadly makes everything look either blurry oder blodgy.

Although I could imagine foggy lighting for all of them

Slight bump, i'm making some new avatars for myself, and i'm starting with the simplest thing.
The avatars will just be giving a DF touch to memes.

Here is a random coffee speedpaint. Mixed feelings on this one.

Here are the problems:

Seems like the elbows are attached under the picture.

Unnatural, uncomfortable posture.

Barely visible knuckles.

Thumb too small.

Adjoining wrist malformed (difficult to be specific here - look at a real wrist a few times from that position and you'll see).

Coffee doesn't look convincing.

Right hand looks crushed, too lean and malformed. Thumb joint dislocated.

Strange rendering of right forearm and wrist makes the arm look alien.

Visible details on left thumbnail but not right. Nails very shiny; unless this is nail-polish, I'd expect them to be more matte.

Strange speculars on skin make it look mottled and shiny.

Strange, blotchy shadows - try to make them smoother and more uniform.

To be honest it is possibly the laziest drawing ive ever done.

I'll give you one point of criticism: Please put more effort into things that you want others to examine; you will not improve if you don't put in any work in the first place. Thank you.

You don't decide how thumbs are big or small, it's the artist's decision, it's how that guy was born, some people with disabilities/diseases may have small thumbs, you never know.

Thats not the point. "The person the artist is drawing is misformed" is not an excuse. This is a thread for constructive criticism, so if somebody draws something that looks wrong in a way, other people say why and how it looks wrong, and how the artist can improve upon this.

That face seems a bit disjointed in a way I can't quite put my finger on. The way the eyes interact with the rest of it just looks off somehow?

Are you really learning art all by yourself? If I hadn't know who you are, I would think that you are a student of some old and prestigious Russian fine arts academy. The technique is too old-school and academic for a hobbyist.

Also, the eyes look suspicious.

EDIT: "old-school" means classical.

I think... I know what looks wrong with the eyes. It's like they're tilted wrong for the shape. Specifically, the outer corners of them (closest to the ears). It's like a combination of sad and Asian, but they need to be rotated slightly (inward towards the nose, maybe?). Don't know how else to describe it.

Other than that, amazing.

Lordnincompoop's fine portrait got me inspired to do some portrait drawing myself. Since (apparently) studying photos is bad, very bad, overwhelmingly bad and endangering the sanity of others, I've decided to draw the only person I can ask to pose for me — myself.
