Do you guys allow sculpture stuff? Like plasticine polymer stuff, not actual wheel and clay things.

I think there's a crafters' guild somewhere, though it's not as active.

Aight, here's the dump for you to enjoy. Criticism appreciated as always, but not really necessary for sketches.

The wolf-copters are your own work.  I was hoping you would remember.  Part of the reason I mentioned them was to lighten the tone of my post.  I agree with your intentions, and like having you around, so I don't want to ruin your day.  Oh, and AirWolf was an action show in the 80's about a high-tech combat helicopter.  I thought it might be the unknown inpiration that you mentioned when you posted the wolf-copters.  I think that was you.  I'm starting to think that I was looking at it with my eyes crossed, and miss-aligned the poster and post areas now.

That was me, and I has never heard of AirWolf until yesterday - I'll go check that out, I guess?

D: My tiny post got ignored by everyone except one! (In fact, I couldn't find it first time around).

I notice the image is too big for its own good... the resolution is horrible!

Compared to other sketches, a totally non-skillful, boring line drawing of a ship.
I like it though.

Hopefully this will make it better!

I suggest you make something more substantial and bring it here. Attempt to express tone with your pencil.

Is Sketchbook for the Artist also helpful?(same author Simblet as Drawing Book)

IIRC, it's the same book under a new cover and title.

most of those are not exactly in a state where they can be criticized, they're quick sketches, they have plenty of mistakes, the kind even an experienced draftsman would make, and they're not really made to be shown. they're good exercises, though
that said, the ear in that last "doodle" seems awkwardly placed to far back in the head, and that hairstyle, damn, it demonstrates a tremendous lack of fashion sensibility

I dig the tones on the head sketch. The rest of your sketches are pretty good, at least to me.

Yeah, the amount of pages is the same in both books, so they must be identical.

I figured as much, but I don't have much more, and I don't much enjoy criticising people as a faceless artist.

Noted about the ear. About the lack of sensibility, I guess I can't help it, haha. ;-_-

No, I live in Sweden. It's that little penis-shaped spit of land at the top of a continent called Europe - you've probably never heard about it.
Hey, I visited Sweden about two months ago. You guys have some really unusual traditional Christmas meals. :P But I enjoyed your coffee a lot (Zoégas <3) and returned home with a full coffer of those, along with a nasty case of bronchitis.

Issues:

1. No chin
2. Distracting asymmetry (look at the eyes)
3. No lower eyelid
4. No cheekbone
5. No cheeks
6. Vestigial nasolabial fold
7. Overall "flat" look - too much attention has been placed on the lips, not enough elsewhere
8. Incomplete portrait

Of course it's incomplete and lacking the listed components. It isn't finished yet and I most certainly do intend to add them. I wanted to do the facial features that torment me the most first. I just wanted to ask what has to be fixed before I continue and make the damage harder to undo.

About the eyes, there is something that irks me about them, especially the one on our left. Regarding the lower eyelids, I have some problems there and I'm not sure what to do. Whenever I add them, she looks horribly sleep deprived and they look more like eyebags than eyelids. I'm not sure how to avoid that.

As for the nasolabial fold, what if she doesn't have them? I can't actually see them on the model's face. They're usually not visible on younger persons, especially when having a neutral/serene facial expression and the muscles are relaxed. Should I go with the draw only what you see or add them anyway?

The lips are too detailed? Since when is too much detail bad? :P But yes, I see what you mean. I'll try to tone them a bit down and give the other regions as much attention as I can. But I'm actually happy with how the lips came out, but I see that they kinda don't fit in with the rest this way.

By the way, texts dealing with "idea facial proportions" usually tend to be bollocks.

Well most of them can be brought down to "split the face in two, add hundred horizontal lines across it and proceed to add desired face components on the line number __. Drawing from life and having a reference/model is much better.

The parts about the asymmetry, nasolabial fold, and lips sound right to me though.  I would add that using a finer brush for the eyelashes, and detailing is going to be necessary.  Using completely uniform brush strokes with the round brush draws attention to the brush strokes, and often, away from the idea that is trying to be portrayed and/or conveyed.

On a more positive note, I've been going through the thread backwards, and this is a great improvement over the earlier brushwork.

Ogdibus, thanks for carefully and patiently explaining everything. I'm glad you understand it isn't finished yet and are pointing out what areas could use improvement. I'll try to improve what I can.
Yes, I indeed need a finer brush. I tried doing the eyelashes with great delicacy, but it isn't enough. Any recommendations where to start looking for brushes more suited for this? I have little experience in that area :/

And thank you very much, I really do hope it's better than before.

Compared to other sketches, a totally non-skillful, boring line drawing of a ship.
I like it though.

How in the world do you upload your pictures? :o When I tried to view it, my browser just allowed me to download it, but not open it in a tab.
Also, don't find it personal if you sometimes don't get much feedback. Sometimes the thread goes way to fast for everything to get noticed.

Nah, the meals here are standard fare; it's all your food that's exotic. :p

I love dark coffees, and there's plenty around - rich and sumptuous.

It seems you've modelled the face as if she lacks those bones and shapes - which she (hopefully) doesn't. The cheeks and cheekbones will protrude and puff at their respective places, which they don't here. Maybe that's just an artifact of you personal WIP, but in that case, I'd rather have waited for the final product.

They're just my observations, though - if they really don't apply, then feel free to carry on.

The issue is that her eyeballs just sort of blend in with her eyelids and face like they're one aggregate mass of tissue. At least some clearer delineation would work - a less blurry transition with a harder brush?

As for the nasolabial fold, what if she doesn't have them? I can't actually see them on the model's face. They're usually not visible on younger persons, especially when having a neutral/serene facial expression and the muscles are relaxed. Should I go with the draw only what you see or add them anyway?

I used that term for lack of a better one - there's generally a crest-and-valley type of geometry from the cheek and mouth boundary area there even if there isn't an apparent fold (like with many younger folks), and you don't see it here. There's this strange sort of smudge across both sides of her nose that doesn't really make sense in terms of geometry because there's nothing to give rise to that shadow, and makes the her nose look pushed in somehow.

Here's the self-portrait I've mentioned before. Oh my, it has a lot of flaws.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After looking through my work, my father told me that my art style resembles the art styles of Soviet socialist realist artists. If it does, I wonder if it's a good or bad thing. I've seen a lot of good Socialist Realist artwork, so it mustn't be bad.

I'll make a brief note for your self-portrait for now: Look at the level of contrast between your eyebrows, background, lips and the rest of the portrait. Your hair, shirt and face are all a little too washed out in tone, and your face has quite a few blanks. Work with what you see, and I'm pretty sure there isn't a chalky-faced vampire behind the other monitor. :P

This may be less valid IRL if your scanner's shite like mine, but looking at the tone of the paper and the face, I'm fairly sure the face hasn't got enough graphite on it.

please dont suck my blood im sorry i upset you

I look like a chalky vampire here because of two things: 1. My skin tone is rather pale and 2. I tend to use hard pencils when shading for some reason, mainly because it gives a steady light tone comparing to HB or B pencils. And I was trying to imitate the portraits by Andrew Loomis. Anyway, I'll try making things more contrast.

By the way, after I saw you being online, I've been shivering with fear for at least 5 or 10 minutes, trying in vain to calm my nerves by listening to this. You don't know how much I'm afraid of you (first impression lasts, I guess :)) ).

Yes, but only once or twice - I never much liked pen-and-ink for anything art-related (writing is a different matter entirely - I must confess I am a little of a pen nut!), and if I had a choice I'd pick soft graphite or a similar medium over ink any day. It's partly familiarity, but also because I find it easier to express tone in graphite & co.

Why do you ask?
