I'm intrigued, care to elucidate? Or provide some examples of your work? (i'm not doubting you ... I just am genuinely interested)

i don't have a scanner, and i rarelly draw from life with my digital drawing table, so i have no real example of draughtsmanship, but some people find this drawing here impressive, it is largelly unreferenced, tough, and my mistakes haunt me every time i look at it

Well i've been drawing without reference most of my (short) life, only recently have i started using them, and for things i completley suck at, like animals, or women, or most other stuff that isn't giant robots/tanks/demons/monsters

every artist should assume they suck at everything equally. drawing without a reference is fine until you start to actually use references, then you start to notice how much you sucked before. if you don't, then you're doing it wrong.
about your drawings: the lion is fine, tough a bit boring, the big headed creature's head is a bit flat, you should try to suggest more volume in it, the other two guys' it's good for you to try out positions that aren't completely frontal, but you exagerated a bit on the perspective distortion.

References are infinitely useful in all manners of art (with the exception being extreme abstract). Studying references lets you know how things should look and allows you to make them more realistic or plausible. Even if you're drawing demons a knowledge of proper anatomy will help them look like something real, rather then just a doodle.

This thread has suddenly gained five pages. :|

I don't usually bother with references, partially because I have a bad case of not really caring. The other part is that using a reference would mean that I am actually serious about what I'm doing; that I really do care; that this is actually the best I can do rather than a 20-minute doodle I threw together when I was struck by inspiration. Which would just completely ruin all my psychological defense mechanisms. I should probably consider just getting over it one of these days.

Anyway.

Jopax, I like that one-eyed fellow in the middle there.

Lofn, I continue to find your super-high-contrast style very enjoyable. Even if you shouldn't use .jpg for that, mumble grumble.

I have a bad habit of not using references.

Although I constantly flick through semi-relevant photos (e.g. noses if I'm having trouble drawing one)

Then again, most of my work is rather impulsive anyway, and it must be quite obvious.

Can't say I'm too proud of the background or special effects.  It's supposed to be a burning city in the far distance, but I think the hand-glowy thing kinda botches the lighting and makes it look like it should be closer.
Not so sure what to think about the figure, though.

Hungry, that dragon skeleton is looking pretty good so far, and those front legs are starting to look much better. I feel like trying another one, but I'm not sure.

I started another dragon, but I can't really get the head right. I've done the body so far, trying to get the legs looking normal ( I'm not too sure about the tail):

As you can see, I sort of just imagined what the back legs would look like and went from there, along with the tail. Thoughts?
