Heh. Too late.

He switched it back to something awesome.

By which I mean "the same thing, but as a goblin".

Yet more exaggerated figures, yet this time most of them are interacting with each other.  Each pair took no more than about 30 seconds.

Edit; oops

I'm drawing a dwarf.

I posted him in fanart, too.

He's pretty much my first major attempt at a face.
I'm quite pleased with him!

huh, kinda the same problem I had with that dwarf who's beard was the same colour as his skin.
Ironhand, I would suggest making a clearer divide between where his hair stops and his head begins.

Good call.

I hadn't really gotten out of his face yet.

I'll probably put a crown and coif on his head eventually,
so I'm not really worrying about his hair yet.

Don't think of it as being besieged by thralls/husks, think of it as having your own personal moat of life hating mutilated menaces

Now wall yourself in quickly

What does that do? he goes epileptic and opens Warp Portals?
Spoiler: From The Táin: (click to show/hide)

But there are many "underground diminiutive people", the Aes Sidhe, the Tuatha de Danann, and less spiritual ones... There's also stories of tribes in Scotland that were driven underground by the Gaels.
The tuatha de danann were always more like elves than dwarves (even after they were driven underground and became the Aes Sidhe)

If you really want dwarves, you could make it a Celtic/Norse hybrid, which would be awesome. "Jörmungandr the Midgar Serpent has arrived at your fortress. You are dead." I don't really know any race that could be dwarves in Celtic myhtology though.

That may be the only way to go about it :-\
Norse Mythology offers a few good megabeast Ideas as well: frost giants, World serpents, colossal Wolves...

@akigagak: The Picts, perhaps?
I think the celts, the gaels, the picts, and the Fir Bolg would work better as races of men.
Fomorians would obviously be the goblin equivalent (except with more castes...)
The tuatha would be noble, forest dwelling elves, and the Sidhe could dwell in those kobold mounds that they have in the new version.

I also need Ideas on plants and metals to replace those which are unique to dwarf fortress.
I'm thinking of replacing Adamantine with a legendary Norse Alloy called Orichalcum.
Sorry for dragging this up from the past, but for those that are interested in both ancient Irish myths and incredible art I'd recommend checking out Oghme Comics (link).
