This is a goblin from EFFIGIES.

image

When I've drawn goblins from DWARF FORTRESS or GRAND ADVENTURE, they usually look pretty standard. They're bald, green, and nasty with big eyes, jagged teeth, and long ears. I decided that the "evil savage" design didn't really work for EFFIGIES goblins.

the Goblins in EFFIGIES are an immortal race that have slept beneath the earth for two centuries. They are powerful and dangerous (it took the combined efforts of men, elves, and dwarves to drive them underground), and I think their design should reflect that. They are not cowardly or sneaky, but stern and brutal, with traces of nobility in their destructive determination.

You make it sound and look like they're almost dwarves... Awesome picture!

Goblins were created by a jealous god as a sort of mockery of dwarves (and other races) but they rebelled against their creator, advancing beyond that state and becoming an equal match for the dwarven race.

Awesome picture!
Thanks!

I like the pic as well!

In general, I think powerful and dangerous goblins are much more interesting than sneaky and cowardly ones, and I like to think DF goblins are the former. Kobolds are the weak, sneaky race that steals all your stuff and puts a curse on pitchblende to keep you from smelting and refining it; goblins are the sieging army types.

I think that goblin is the best picture I've ever seen on these forums. Or anywhere. Awesome work.

I've always thought the DF goblins were the insane but possibly ingenuitive type,
like in the Magic: The Gathering.

When did mechanical ingenuity become part of the goblin stereotype?

I blame Warcraft.

Everybody knows goblins have purple hair.

If you want crazy contraptions, you need either dwarves, or another race made from madness. In most fantasy themes, dwarves aren't mad enough, so they choose goblins as made scientists. Too bad, dwarves have easy booze and magma access.

Well, this is all I've been able to do recently - it's a bit odd. The camera yellowed and desaturated it, and I took the picture at an off angle, but I think it still gets the point across. This is by no means finished - I think I'm going to remove the ship and redo the sky, among other things.

Great work as usual everyone! Exciting things are coming out of this thread.
