I'm just going to draw attention to the fact that my art thread as of yet has no replies, and that I have several good drawings up there. Not that I'm drawing attention to myself or saying that you should go there.

Lord Dakoth: I think you would benefit a lot from doing contour drawings (blind and otherwise). That should bulk up your ability to define the outer edges of shapes in a more advanced way. Try treating shadows and highlights as shapes as well and I think you will start to see serious improvement.

The thing is that I almost never have a subject when I'm drawing. I just start throwing lines down, and then keep the ones I like.

Sorry, I realize that might have sounded a bit harsh.
I'm sort of having a really awful week so I apologize if I have/am going to speak plainly.

A lot of people here have really stepped up and started taking themselves seriously with their drawing. The only way to get better at anything is to get serious about it and apply the effort needed for action and thought. I think if you flip through this thread, or check out some of the sketchbooks on conceptart.org, the fact that you can learn to draw on your own terms by taking yourself seriously is self-evident.

That's what this thread is meant to be for.

Passing off advice that is meant to be helpful is a pretty good indication that you aren't really ready to get serious. I took your comment to mean that. I might be wrong, in that case I apologize.

It's cool; don't worry about it. I had the most critical art teacher in high school, so I'm used to worse.

Truth is I'm not too serious about drawing. I'm never going to go into an art career. Right now it's just a way for me to blow off steam and work-related stress. I do appreciate your advice though.

And yes, before you start drawing anything from thought, read that book "Drawing on the Right side of the Brain" and draw things you see.

I don't draw, but I'm majoring in Drama, and getting upset at somebody for providing criticism towards your art is the best way to fail as an artist. Even trying to find excuses to defend yourself from the criticism is a poor idea, that we all fall into once in a while.

A good place to go to have a non-growth experience where criticism is discouraged would be American Idol.

At first I was like "what the fuck" but now I think it actually looks pretty gnarly.
