Depends what I want to do with the sketch. I usually do the rough draft of the sketch in pencil, and if I intend to colour it afterwards I do the linework in Black ink. If I do not intend to colour it I usually shade it with darker pencils.

Some good stuff flying about in here, glad to see.

I had a quick wazz at trying some sort of atmospheric landscapes.

I can't decide whether it's sort of good or just decidedly average, so I need you to JUDGE my work.

Eh, it's missing SOMETHING. Not sure what. Maybe some more nonsense to the background. Or the foreground. Right now there's just this featureless gray desert stretching to the horizon.

The Horizon seems a little...close. Like it is only a few feet out and that the sky is just a vertical backdrop at that conjunction of sky and land. I would suggest making the features closer to the horizon more horizontally stretched to emphasize their perspective and perhaps add a bit of a hill to the background, thus making these faults with the horizon.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

only problem I really notice without looking with great detail, is the fact that the people are really really tiny and skinny.

The composition isn't good; everything is in the center and it isn't interesting. The landscape isn't striking or atmospheric, as Soadreqm said, it just looks like an endless expanse of featureless nothing. It looks like you got distracted detailing the tree and the people and neglected to build up the rest of the scene. You should take time to nail down a solid composition with basic shapes before you start getting into detail.

Here's me dicking around with it for a couple of minutes to tighten shit up as an example. It's more interesting and the viewers eyes move around the picture and stay in the picture instead of stopping at the center and then wandering off.

Wow cool, thanks people.

It's great to get some useful feedback.

Perhaps I'll spend some time putting some shapes together to practice composition before getting in to the whole picture thing.

I'd suggest adding a bit more detail to the things other than the tree and dudes, Davion. Not too much - otherwise the tree stops being the focus - but just a bit more so that the tree doesn't seem too out of place.

You have the same problem as I had with my "cave" before.

You have no foreground.

If you've made some elevation on foreground (just small part of the ground) it would make the pic much more interesting.

I haven't given anything in a while, so here are some cute dwarves. I drew some others as well, so see if you can spot who they are. Would appreciate critique on these little guys.

Interesting stuff, Spreggo.

I've been convinced to restart from the basics, using Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain, and the first exercise was to draw myself, but there are no practical mirrors to draw from in this house, so I had to draw myself from memory, also used no guidelines or anything like that.

I think it's okaaay, but it's still pretty sucky. Oh and some minimal editing to get rid of smudges and areas that were turned a little too bright from the camera.
