Opera Mini is working strange again, I'll put the response here later, when I get home.

Just a curious question: have you ever tried sketching with a pen?

Yes, but only once or twice - I never much liked pen-and-ink for anything art-related (writing is a different matter entirely - I must confess I am a little of a pen nut!), and if I had a choice I'd pick soft graphite or a similar medium over ink any day. It's partly familiarity, but also because I find it easier to express tone in graphite & co.

Why do you ask?
I ask because I highly recommend it for anyone who hasn't tried. Heck, I'm due for another round of ink in my own sketchbook.

The sketches you showed were very scribbly and were kinda difficult to decipher in places, except as silhouettes. Switching to pens for sketching will produce a lot of terrible drawings at first, but it teaches you to be more confident with the lines that you place. You know that you 1) can't erase and 2) can't use too many lines or it turns into a blob of ink, so you start to be more thoughtful and judicious with the lines that you do put down.

Of course there's never any "right" way to do art, but that's just something I've found helpful in the past. In general I like to experiment with new media every now and again, just to keep myself from falling into a rut. It's just that the permanent nature of ink can have a very beneficial effect on the way you plan and visualize, if you let it.

^ what he said.

I switch up every now and then between using pens and pencils, just to keep the skills sharp. Pencils are nice for details and stuff but with pens I feel I am more able to produce contrasting and striking stuff despite sketchiness as the lines have much more strenght and weight and as such make any piece expressive.

Plus cross-hatching (or something like that) is still the sexiest way to shade things, despite me being rather bad with it it's easily the most fun thing you can make with a pen (besides eye-on-pen magic tricks).

If anything try doing over your sketches with pens to emphasize them more and bring out certain parts, something I often do when I feel like drawing but have no idea what to do, grab an old sketchbook and start tracing over stuff :D

While I almost always do digital drawings I occasionally switch to pencil and paper, sometimes even pen and paper. Most of the skills transfer from one to the other, so it's nice to try something else once and a while.

I despise working with pens.

Now, a good set of markers? Microns, for example? Mmm... I could work with those all day.

Are you talking about foil markers? These are, indeed, the bomb.

If you don't like pens, try an ultra fine marker or something. I've had a lot of fun with porous tipped pens - They're pretty much markers with tiny tips. They don't randomly explode like ballpoint pens, and don't have that tendency to get stuck. I had to get a set for my sister because she kept on stealing mine...

Oh my, that poor dog. I love his "oh crap" face :D And I really like how you draw dwarves, they always look so indifferent to the horrors around them.

Hey. I 've looked at alot of the recent stuff and I am amazed.

I'm actually GMing a game in the Forum Games section called The Rabbit Hole and I was curious if anyone would be interested in drawing a couple creatures or landscapes. Y'know like add the picture to the words. We can PM about the details to any drawings of locations that are about to be stumbled upon and ideas either of us has.

 here's a link: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=102166.0

Reply in my thread or this one if you are interested or just PM me. I think it would work out really neat if this could happen.
