Very nice little dorf you have there. I like how you skipped all the un-necessary facial features.

Facial features are for weak elves and humans.  8)

Since I haven't contibuted anything (for a while at least), I drew this last night when I was approximately 20% awake. What you're looking at is raw subconscious, here. I don't even remember what this was supposed to be.

Lofn, that is amazing. My art will probably never be that good.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Looks a bit flat. The hair isn't following the presumed curve of the forehead, the nose is lacking definition, and the ears look kind of stapled on. Actually, with the way his head is turned, I don't think the right (his left) ear should be visible at all. And I think the neck looks a bit to thick. Could just be the hair, I guess.

But yeah, this looks really good.

The drawing is good, I think it would benefit from either another step of tone in the shading or maybe darkening the shadow you already have, to improve the rendering.

Hey this is great! A little hard to offer critique until I see more of your work and know where you are at. I think though that you have a decent eye for design to be able to put together as cohesive a stylized character as this.

Welcome to the guild!

Don't fear hard edges. Start by choosing the focal point of your painting and placing 1 or 2 hard edges there.

What's this for? It looks great :D

Unbelievable.

I totally redid the nose, lips, left-hand eye and hair on that image, restructuring it so it all followed the contours of the face properly.  Then when I started adding some lighting, I hit ctrl-S, and Flash crashed.   FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

Thank you for your suggestions for improvement, though, Spreggo/Soadreqm.  It certainly looked much better, not to mention more feminine (it's a she, but everyone so far has identified it as male), with a decent nose and lips.  FFFFF I am seriously pissed at Flash, if it crashed and I didn't save I would be annoyed but accepting of my mistake, crashing WHILE saving is just pissing in my face.

freeformschooler, thank you for the compliment but the only thing stopping your art from being leagues ahead of mine is practice.

Have you considered using Illustrator or some other vector based program?

Flash is pretty unstable, and it isn't really geared towards intensive art making.

It might take a bit to adapt but I think you would benefit in the long run. You can always import vectors from Illustrator into Flash when you need to do the animation or what have you.

Illustrator doesn't have comparable drawing tools, unless they're hidden somewhere deep in the guts of the program.  It seems to exclusively use paths and I exclusively use the paintbrush tool. >_<

Illustrator has a brush tool and a 'blob' brush tool. I think the difference being that the blob brush tool consolidates solid areas into a single field, where the regular brush tool preserves the individual strokes.

Flash's drawing abilities are basically Illustrator but stripped down to the basics.

But, by not having all the programming/animation stuff attached illustrator is more stable for art purposes. Even for programming purposes Flash is pretty unstable. I got in the habit of near constant saving when I was doing action script work.

Hrm, I'll give it another look at some point.  The blob tool sounds close to what I want.  And yeah, Flash is less stable than a fat man on a unicycle.

I managed to redo it a bit and do some soft shading.

Flash, though, Illustrator is not cooperating just yet.

I like the nose much better on this one, though that's just my opinion.

He seems to be cross-eyed though, and his mouth seems to be sticking out a bit too much.

... and his mouth seems to be sticking out a bit too much.

I think that is the thick dark line that defines the underside of the bottom lip causing the illusion of the lips being pursed.
